Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, currently campaigning for the governorship of California, is refuting allegations made by a former staff member regarding sexual assault, as pressure mounts from fellow Democrats for him to withdraw from the race.<\/p>\n

Swalwell stated, “These claims are unfounded and surface just before an election against the leading candidate for governor. For nearly two decades, I have dedicated myself to public service as both a prosecutor and a congressman, consistently advocating for women’s rights.” This statement was issued in response to the allegations reported by the San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In light of the allegations, several of Swalwell’s supporters have begun to retract their endorsements for his gubernatorial campaign. Prominent Democratic figures, including the top three leaders in the House, have urged him to step aside. Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar collectively called for an immediate cessation of Swalwell’s campaign, citing the serious nature of the accusations against him.<\/p>\n

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also commented, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the matter with complete transparency. She noted in her conversation with Swalwell that it would be more appropriate to handle the situation outside the context of a gubernatorial campaign.<\/p>\n

Representative Jimmy Gomez, who had been leading Swalwell’s campaign efforts, announced his resignation from the campaign, labeling the allegations as “the most troubling and severe accusations imaginable.” He expressed his inability to continue in his role and urged Swalwell to exit the race to ensure accountability without distractions.<\/p>\n

Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona, who recently defended Swalwell against online speculation, stated that he is retracting his endorsement and regretted his previous support. Similarly, Senator Adam Schiff from California has also withdrawn his endorsement and called for Swalwell to step down.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> detailed the account of an unnamed woman who claims to have been hired as an intern in Swalwell\u2019s district office at the age of 21. She alleges that Swalwell pursued her, sending unsolicited explicit images. According to her, after a night out in 2019, she awoke in Swalwell\u2019s hotel room, disoriented and feeling violated. Additionally, she claims that five years later, at a gala in New York, Swalwell attempted to pursue her again while she was intoxicated and allegedly assaulted her.<\/p>\n

ABC News has yet to independently verify these allegations. Swalwell has indicated that he is prepared to take legal action to address these claims, stating, “I will defend myself with the truth and will pursue legal remedies as necessary. My priority moving forward is to be with my family and to protect our reputation against these fabrications.”<\/p>\n

Following the allegations, other candidates in the gubernatorial race, such as San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, and former State Controller Betty Yee, have also called for Swalwell to withdraw. The leading candidates in the race, billionaire Tom Steyer and former Congresswoman Katie Porter, expressed support for the alleged victim but did not directly call for Swalwell\u2019s withdrawal.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, Swalwell’s campaign asserted that he had not received any complaints nor requested anyone to sign non-disclosure agreements. Campaign spokesperson Micah Beasley described the rumors as “false and outrageous,” suggesting they were disseminated by opponents threatened by Swalwell’s frontrunner status. He further claimed that in Swalwell’s 13 years of service, no staff member had ever been asked to sign an NDA, nor had any ethics complaints been lodged against him.<\/p>\n
