On Friday, the Gujarat state government announced that its police force has become the first in India to create an artificial intelligence-based tool designed to enhance narcotics investigations and enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n
Dubbed \u2018NARIT AI\u2019 (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), this innovative system offers real-time analytical assistance to officers engaged in investigations, according to an official release.<\/p>\n
The Gujarat Police explained that \u201cNARIT AI is a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-based platform aimed at supporting law enforcement in navigating intricate narcotics cases within the framework of the NDPS Act. By incorporating legal provisions, case laws, and investigative protocols, this system provides timely analytical guidance to investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tool was developed through a collaboration between the Western Railway police in the Vadodara division and an AI startup based in Mumbai.<\/p>\n
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi emphasized the state’s commitment to a \u201czero tolerance\u201d stance on narcotics offenses, asserting that the government will exhaust all available resources, including AI, to ensure thorough case registration and successful prosecutions.<\/p>\n
This initiative was brought to life under the leadership of DGP KLN Rao, the chief of the state police, along with Surat City Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, and spearheaded by Abhay Soni, the Superintendent of Police for the Western Railway in Vadodara.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Soni remarked, \u201cPreviously, only specialized personnel managed investigations, leading to increased workloads and administrative delays. This tool will function as a force multiplier, utilizing advanced RAG-based AI technology to empower every officer to conduct thorough, compliant investigations, ultimately boosting the conviction rates in NDPS cases. The application has been built and fine-tuned using historical cases from higher courts, Bare Acts, and government regulations, ensuring minimal inaccuracies and high procedural fidelity.\u201d<\/p>\n
He further noted, \u201cA significant challenge in NDPS investigations is adhering to procedural requirements. Historically, even with compelling evidence, gaps in investigation protocols have allowed defendants to evade justice. This application will equip every investigator with a comprehensive report to guide their final decisions, helping to fill procedural voids, enhance the quality of investigations, and increase conviction rates in NDPS cases. Additionally, the tool is designed for use by all ranks of police personnel, facilitating swift integration of this new technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
