After crossing the finish line first in the women’s 1,500 meters final, Hollingsworth appeared less triumphant than expected. She expressed conflicting emotions, acknowledging that her victory came at the detriment of four-time champion Hull, who fell in the last 50 meters of the race.<\/p>\n
The situation intensified as protests from Hull and Abbey Caldwell’s teams were initially rejected by race officials. Upon further review of the footage, Hollingsworth was disqualified, as it was determined that she had played a role in Hull’s fall while attempting to overtake her. Consequently, Sarah Billings was awarded the first-place title, with Caldwell taking second.<\/p>\n
In a last-minute effort, Hollingsworth filed an appeal, which was heard today. An independent panel ultimately reinstated her as the national champion, concluding that she was not responsible for the incident. “After reviewing all available footage and interviewing relevant parties, the panel upheld Hollingsworth’s appeal,” stated Australian Athletics in an announcement.<\/p>\n
The panel also ruled out the possibility of a re-run but indicated that they would reassess the event’s status as a selection race for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. Athletes must meet qualification standards and compete in the relevant event at the Nationals, with three athletes selected per event.<\/p>\n
Hollingsworth now appears poised to secure one of the spots for the one mile event, which will replace the 1,500 meters, while Billings, Caldwell, and Hull will vie for the remaining positions. Given her status as an Olympic silver medalist, Hull is expected to claim one of those spots.<\/p>\n
