At this year\u2019s Chelsea Flower Show, typically renowned for its rare roses and exquisite irises, a surprising highlight may come in the form of a pink, sequined garden gnome, designed in collaboration with David Beckham.<\/p>\n
The former England football captain is working alongside King Charles on a garden project for the upcoming May event. As part of this initiative, Beckham has been tasked with painting a garden gnome, which will be auctioned off to benefit charity.<\/p>\n
This playful addition marks a significant shift in tradition, as garden gnomes have been considered inappropriate for the show since 1927 due to their “tacky” reputation, clashing with the event’s upscale image.<\/p>\n
This year, however, the show organizers have made a unique decision to temporarily lift the gnome ban to support the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) initiative aimed at encouraging school gardening and engaging children with horticulture.<\/p>\n
It remains uncertain if Beckham\u2019s wife, Victoria, a noted fashion designer, has influenced the gnome’s design. Given her typically understated aesthetic, it seems unlikely. Beckham, when informed by the RHS that he could embellish the gnome with as many sequins and glitters as he desired, appeared excited and eager to embrace the creative freedom.<\/p>\n
While examining the vibrant array of paints provided, he remarked, “I might have to get some pink.” Sources from the RHS indicated that Beckham devoted several days to painting the gnome and had recently met King Charles and gardener Alan Titchmarsh at the royal residence of Highgrove to discuss their vision for the garden. Reports suggest that the King advocated for the gnome’s inclusion, being a fan of such whimsical figures, and even has one on the grounds of his estate in Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n
During this meeting, they also decided to incorporate a beehive into the garden, inspired by their mutual interest in beekeeping and honey production. The garden will showcase an easel crafted by Eleanor Pickin, a graduate from the Snowdon School of Furniture, who connected with the team during their visit to Highgrove.<\/p>\n
This year’s show promises to be more playful than in the past, featuring a variety of unusual exhibits, including a “sex garden” backed by a company that markets vibrators. Visitors may find themselves intrigued by the Aphrodite-themed “pleasure garden,” which will display flora linked to love and romance.<\/p>\n
The RHS is inviting other celebrities to contribute their own decorated gnomes for inclusion in the King\u2019s garden, with all pieces set to be auctioned off. Notable participants include actress Cate Blanchett and chef Mary Berry.
