The horse suffered a broken back after clearing the final fence, a fact that became evident only after crossing the finish line.<\/p>\n
During a subsequent stewards’ inquiry, jockey Paul Townend explained that Gold Dancer had made a mistake at the last fence and, after a brief struggle, managed to run straight to the finish.
