A new exhibition showcasing First Nations art has officially opened at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, featuring 30 large-scale pieces created by 49 artists from the APY Lands. This highly anticipated show, titled Ngura Pulka \u2014 Epic Country, was delayed while an investigation confirmed the authenticity of the artworks, ultimately finding them to be genuine.<\/p>\n
The exhibition will be on display for a duration of 19 weeks at the National Gallery. It highlights the artistic contributions of First Nations artists from remote areas in north-west South Australia, including Coober Pedy and Adelaide. After a three-year postponement, 30 significant paintings are now available for public viewing, made possible through collaboration with the APY Art Centre Collective.<\/p>\n
Tina Baum, the head curator for First Nations art at the National Gallery, emphasized the unique aspect of this exhibition, particularly the large dimensions of the works. “Of the 30 pieces in the exhibition, 29 measure three by three meters,” Ms. Baum noted. “These works are grand both in storytelling and in their physical scale.”<\/p>\n
The initial plans for the exhibition faced challenges three years ago due to allegations that non-Aboriginal individuals were interfering with the artworks. As a result, the National Gallery conducted an independent review of 28 pieces, which led to the postponement of the original opening date set for June 2023.<\/p>\n The exhibition presents a rich tapestry of stories encompassing themes of the sky, land, and subterranean realms. Ms. Baum explained that the artists aim to share their jukurrpa, a term that refers to their lore and ceremonial practices. “Visitors will encounter a variety of narratives from the APY Lands, including the Seven Sisters story of the sky and various land stories,” she added.<\/p>\n Yankunytjatjara artist Sandra Pumani, whose artwork is featured in the exhibition, expressed her pride in representing her upbringing through her creations. “My work is a reflection of my home and the experiences I had growing up in that beautiful place,” Ms. Pumani shared. As the chair of the APY Art Centre Collective, she highlighted the significance of sharing their stories and art with a broader audience.<\/p>\n Another artist, George Cooley, who is also a Yankunytjatjara community leader and opal miner, described how his work portrays his homeland in Coober Pedy. “I’ve titled my painting ‘blue ground country.’ In the language of opal miners, blue ground indicates a low likelihood of finding opals, yet it’s also about capturing the area’s beauty and the layers of color found in the terrain,” Mr. Cooley explained. While his perspective differs from that of his colleagues, who often depict aerial views, he seeks to convey a similar narrative focused on the land and traditional practices.<\/p>\n The exhibition has received support from various art organizations, including Tjala Arts, Mimili Maku Arts, and Umoona Arts, among others.
