The exhibition “Acts of Inheritance” at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions, as described by artist and disability advocate Jordan Valageorgiou. Curated by Valageorgiou, the exhibition features works from 17 disabled artists affiliated with We Are Studios, an artist-led collective based in Blacktown, Western Sydney.<\/p>\n
The theme of the exhibition revolves around identity, focusing on how it is both shaped and inherited. Among the featured works are a music video by Jane Thatcher, an installation by Timothy W Martin that delves into wrestling culture, and jewelry pieces created by Adrienne Proud.<\/p>\n
As a co-founder of We Are Studios, Valageorgiou emphasizes the importance of showcasing a variety of perspectives and artistic styles to reflect the multifaceted nature of disability. He states, “It’s essential for us as studio artists to explore materials, scale, and emotions while engaging in dialogues that we might not otherwise be part of.”<\/p>\n
Valageorgiou expressed his appreciation for feedback, even when a visitor referred to the exhibition as “self-indulgent.” He views such critiques as a positive aspect of their mission, insisting that disabled artists deserve to be regarded as equals. “We welcome all forms of feedback, as it is crucial that we are treated with the same expectations as everyone else,” he added.<\/p>\n
One of the artists, Miah Tito-Barratt, contributed a piece titled “Nebulous,” which features a cloudscape created using gesso, pencil, and gouache on paper. Tito-Barratt encourages viewers to interpret the work in their own way, inspired by the varying perceptions that people have of cloud formations. “It’s about allowing someone else’s experience to alter our perspective,” they explained.<\/p>\n
Tito-Barratt also noted that their piece reflects their experiences as a neurodiverse and genderqueer individual. They find participating in the exhibition particularly meaningful, as it provides a comprehensive perspective on disability. “The works often center on beliefs, family, and memories, humanizing the disability experience in a way that is seldom portrayed,” they remarked.<\/p>\n
Leanne Larwood’s piece, “Dress the Depressed,” is also part of the exhibition. This work creatively engages with the artist’s personal experiences with depression, presenting a life-size magnetic paper doll that visitors can dress up. “It\u2019s a playful yet pointed commentary on the unsolicited advice I’ve received regarding my mental health,” Larwood stated, aiming to facilitate discussions about invisible illnesses.<\/p>\n
Larwood shared how her involvement with We Are Studios has transformed her life. She had previously felt isolated and struggled to find her voice after acquiring a disability later in life. “Art has given me the ability to discuss difficult topics with my community,” she explained, hoping to inspire viewers to reconsider their perceptions of disability.<\/p>\n
Founded in 2023, We Are Studios comprises around 20 artists who collaborate weekly on various projects. Valageorgiou highlighted the collective’s mission to empower artists to dictate their own narratives. “We emerged from a service provider model that limited our representation. Realizing we had the collective skills and experience, we decided to operate on our own terms, regardless of the outcome,” he stated.<\/p>\n
The collective embraces a broad definition of Disability, encompassing individuals with varying access needs, including those who are neurodiverse, Deaf, or living with mental health challenges. “Acts of Inheritance” also serves as a commentary on the artistic landscape of Western Sydney. Larwood expressed her desire to dispel stereotypes about the region, stating, “Great art exists beyond the confines of the Harbour Bridge.” Valageorgiou noted that artists in Western Sydney often face additional challenges due to underrepresentation and funding disparities. “It\u2019s crucial to share our stories and affirm our importance within the broader arts discourse,” he concluded. <\/p>\n
