Eight-year-old Nik has been diagnosed with autism, while five-year-old Christian is awaiting a formal diagnosis for developmental delays and autism.<\/p>\n
Ms. Tran emphasized the need for assistance with daily tasks such as buttoning shirts, tying shoelaces, and managing emotional regulation. She noted that the boys require constant supervision, as everyday environments can present challenges. “I do my best to minimize triggers, but the world itself can be overwhelming,” said Ms. Tran.<\/p>\n
Both children receive funding from the NDIS for various therapies, including psychology, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Ms. Tran has observed significant improvements, particularly with Christian’s ability to articulate his feelings. She has left her job to dedicate herself to caring for her sons, including accompanying Christian to school for support, and appreciates the aid provided by the NDIS.<\/p>\n
However, it is anticipated that in the future, children like Christian and Nik will transition from the NDIS to the Thriving Kids program, which aims to provide support for younger children with “mild to moderate” developmental challenges. Those with “severe, permanent disabilities,” including certain cases of autism and developmental delays, will continue to qualify for NDIS assistance, subject to regular assessments.<\/p>\n
The implementation of Thriving Kids will vary across states and territories, guided by a framework developed by a panel of experts. The program is designed to promptly identify and meet support needs while allowing for adjustments as necessary. Available services will range from online resources to therapeutic interventions in educational settings.<\/p>\n
The rollout of Thriving Kids is scheduled to begin in October, with full service implementation expected by January 2028. However, experts are raising concerns about the potential for children with “moderate needs” to fall through the gaps during implementation. David Trembath, who leads autism research at the Kids Research Institute Australia, acknowledged that while the program looks promising in theory, successful execution is vital.<\/p>\n
Trembath warned that children categorized as having “moderate” needs might not receive appropriate services, as distinguishing between varying levels of support can be challenging. He explained that a child’s needs can fluctuate based on their environment and the support systems in place. “In a controlled home environment, they may appear to thrive, but in public settings, their true needs can become evident,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Trembath emphasized that providing timely and appropriate support is critical for long-term outcomes. If the Thriving Kids program fails to deliver the necessary early interventions, it could lead to escalating needs, ultimately resulting in increased reliance on the NDIS\u2014contradicting the program’s intended cost-saving goals.<\/p>\n
Clare Gibellini, an advocate for autistic individuals, raised concerns about the possibility of children masking their traits during assessments, which could lead to an underestimation of their support needs. “If children are evaluated by assessors unfamiliar with them, the stress of the situation may lead to masking behaviors,” she cautioned.
