Ultimately, Semple seems to have embraced a flexible approach to genre, gifting readers multiple narratives in one.<\/p>\n
Traditionally, Stoicism may not be seen as particularly exciting\u2014this won\u2019t offend Marcus Aurelius\u2014but Semple breathes new life into it. In a conversation with another character, Adora reflects, “I get so enthusiastic about Stoicism that I become scattered. I speak rapidly, jumping from one topic to another, often repeating myself. It\u2019s akin to racing downhill… All I can do is keep moving and hope I maintain some dignity by the end.” Adora\u2019s passion is infectious; long after I finished reading, I found myself quietly repeating, “The cucumber is bitter. Throw it away,” echoing Marcus Aurelius once more.<\/p>\n
Semple\u2019s writing is filled with charm and humor. The book is sprinkled with witty observations, such as when Adora describes a minor character with unusual precision: “His face looked oddly polished, like a Polly Pocket doll that had been licked.” The lively energy sustains the narrative for a significant portion of the book. Characters enter and exit, some becoming familiar, while various plotlines come and go, creating a vibrant, enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n
However, at times, this delightful chaos veers into a less cohesive disarray. There is a jarring section that chronicles the decline of Adora\u2019s marriage through timestamped moments, juxtaposed with a rapid recap of significant political events: “Spring of 2016: I got swept up in Bernie mania”; “September 2018: #MeToo erupts,” and so forth, referencing topics like Brett Kavanaugh and George Floyd. While some of these elements are thematically relevant, they lack the depth to resonate fully within the story. Additionally, Adora\u2019s ex-husband Hal is not developed enough for readers to invest in the dynamics of their marriage.<\/p>\n
In other instances, Semple displays a deft touch in weaving backstory, particularly in the gripping depiction of Adora\u2019s unsuccessful stint as a comedy writer. This intense segment serves as a pivotal moment in the novel, although Adora\u2019s Stoic outlook prompts her to reevaluate this chapter of her life.<\/p>\n
The book is a whimsical balancing act, and the main storyline, which occasionally resembles a meandering tale, concludes cleverly. Personally, I found that the overall narrative did not fully align, yet as Marcus Aurelius noted, perspective shapes our understanding rather than absolute truth. I emerged from the book feeling both more enlightened and somewhat foolish\u2014a delightful state to be left in.<\/p>\n
