Recently, during construction activities, the remains of an Indigenous individual were uncovered, prompting calls for enhanced protections for the island. The discovery occurred at the site of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, leading to an investigation by the Western Australia Police, which confirmed the remains are of historical significance and align with Indigenous ancestry.<\/p>\n
Rottnest Island is a favored tourist spot located off the coast of Perth, renowned for its beautiful beaches and opportunities to see quokkas. However, the island’s painful past remains a source of ongoing anguish for Aboriginal communities. Historical records indicate that the island served as a site of imprisonment for thousands of Aboriginal individuals, many of whom were community leaders, resulting in profound and lasting impacts on their societies.<\/p>\n
Conditions on the island were harsh, and countless individuals who perished due to mistreatment were buried without markers. Hannah McGlade, a human rights expert and Kurin Minang Noongar woman, expressed her belief that Rottnest Island deserves the same recognition as the Burrup Peninsula, which is known for its ancient rock carvings.<\/p>\n
Dr. McGlade advocated for UNESCO World Heritage status, emphasizing the cultural and historical importance of Rottnest Island and its implications for the present day. Such a designation would require countries to preserve sites recognized for their significant cultural or natural value for future generations.<\/p>\n
In 2018, the Western Australian government announced that the Quod, a former prison building on the island, would no longer serve as tourist accommodation. Last year, Indigenous groups established the Kwoba Wirin-up cultural space at the northern end of Rottnest to promote visits by other Indigenous individuals.<\/p>\n
Dr. McGlade, who was involved in efforts during the 1980s to raise awareness about the island’s history, emphasized the necessity of sharing the truth about Rottnest. She recounted how her campaign aimed to inform young visitors who unknowingly camped on burial sites.<\/p>\n
“It was essential to educate them, as many were unaware of the graves beneath them,” she stated. “The state government has only recently confirmed that the Quod will no longer be utilized for tourism purposes.” She reiterated that Aboriginal individuals did not commit crimes but resisted oppression, underscoring the need for ongoing truth-telling regarding the island’s history.<\/p>\n
Wayne Ryder, deputy chair of the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation, supported Dr. McGlade’s call for acknowledgment of the island’s true history. He noted that many in the wider community view Rottnest solely as a holiday destination, while for Aboriginal people, it symbolizes suffering and incarceration.<\/p>\n
“For us, this is a journey toward healing, and discoveries like these resonate deeply with Aboriginal communities,” Mr. Ryder remarked, stating that the remains have been entrusted to the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation, with a meeting planned to ensure cultural considerations are prioritized.<\/p>\n
Dr. McGlade acknowledged the emotional weight of the recent discovery for her community, stating, “Many of us, particularly Noongar people, feel a deep sadness.” She highlighted the cruel and violent treatment faced by Aboriginal individuals on the island, emphasizing the ongoing need to recognize the severity of historical injustices.<\/p>\n
