Fellow competitor Aidan Murphy put pressure on the 18-year-old throughout the race, finishing with an impressive time of 19.88 seconds, marking the second-fastest 200 meters recorded by an Australian, aided by a tailwind of +1.7m\/s.<\/p>\n
Previously, Gout held the national record of 20.02 seconds and had clocked a wind-aided time of 19.84 seconds at last year\u2019s Australian Athletics Championships. However, he surpassed both of those performances in the final on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The race unfolded at a rapid pace, particularly after the withdrawal of newly crowned 100m champion Lachie Kennedy, who pulled out of the highly anticipated 200m event just hours before the heats commenced on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
The decision meant fans at Sydney Olympic Park missed the chance to see a rematch between Kennedy and Gout, as Kennedy had triumphed in their previous encounter at the Maurie Plant Meet last month.<\/p>\n

Australian Athletics confirmed Kennedy’s withdrawal before the competition began on Sunday. According to his management, his decision was precautionary, especially considering it was only his third competition of the year as he prepares for a busy season that includes the World Relays Championship next month, the Diamond League series, and the Commonwealth Games in July.<\/p>\n
The anticipated rematch was expected to be a highlight of the national championships, with Kennedy acknowledging the expectations of the fans.
