Cyclone Vaianu has made its way ashore near the Maketu Peninsula and is now advancing across New Zealand’s North Island.<\/p>\n
This cyclone is causing significant flooding and strong winds, leading authorities to warn that while conditions are already hazardous, the most severe impacts are still to come.<\/p>\n
According to MetService, New Zealand’s meteorological agency, the cyclone’s center is currently located over the Maketu Peninsula and is expected to traverse the North Island further.<\/p>\n
Winds are particularly fierce in the region, with some areas experiencing gusts exceeding 130 kilometers per hour, as noted by the weather bureau.<\/p>\n
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell indicated that the cyclone has shifted “more towards the fringes” of the North Island, thereby relieving Auckland, the nation\u2019s largest city, from the most extreme conditions.<\/p>\n
“We haven’t encountered the intensity we anticipated or feared, which is good news,” Mr. Mitchell remarked. He cautioned, however, that upcoming hours may see an increase in the cyclone’s strength as it approaches closer.<\/p>\n
He also warned that the combination of high tide and significant swells associated with the storm could lead to coastal flooding.<\/p>\n
As a result of the cyclone, hundreds have been forced to evacuate, and approximately 5,000 homes have lost power, although electricity has been restored to about 2,000 of those, according to Mr. Mitchell.<\/p>\n
Stace Tahere from Bay of Plenty Emergency Management reported to Radio New Zealand that the area is experiencing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and large swells, along with ongoing power outages and evacuation orders.<\/p>\n
Mr. Tahere emphasized that although hazardous conditions have already occurred, the most severe impacts are anticipated soon.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, drivers have been cautioned to avoid flooded roadways in towns surrounding Coromandel, where three vehicles attempted to navigate through floodwaters.<\/p>\n
In the Waikato region, located south of Auckland, there have been around 800 power outages, and several homes have been evacuated due to flooding, as reported by Radio New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Fallen trees have obstructed roads in various locations.<\/p>\n
Waikato Civil Defence Group Controller Julian Snowball informed local media that the cyclone poses a risk of further power outages and road closures, which could isolate communities.<\/p>\n
“Mandatory evacuations have been coordinated across various homes, and residents are being supported by friends and family. Civil Defence Centres are available throughout the region for those displaced, if necessary,” Mr. Snowball stated.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, MetService urged residents in coastal regions to evacuate, highlighting that the combination of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding presents a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening situation.<\/p>\n
Local officials have declared a state of emergency in the most densely populated areas of the North Island, including Tauranga, which experienced two landslides that resulted in eight fatalities in February.<\/p>\n
A flood warning has also been issued for Auckland, where the weather forecaster has predicted up to 110 millimeters of rain from late Saturday to Sunday afternoon, accompanied by “heavy swells and coastal flooding.” The agency warned that streams and rivers may rise quickly.<\/p>\n
Gareth Wallis, the city\u2019s emergency operations center controller, cautioned that this is “not the time for sightseeing or taking risks.” He urged residents to respect the closures in place for their safety.<\/p>\n
Alison Stern, the director of Beach Point Apartments at Ohope Beach, is among the many residents in Whakatane on the northeast coast who have evacuated following an order from her local council. “There are steep cliffs behind us and we are close to the water,” she shared with AFP via telephone on Saturday as the holiday town braced for the storm’s approach.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon warned that the cyclone could be destructive and urged those in its path to prepare accordingly. “Ensure that drains are clear, check on your neighbors, and be ready for potential power outages,” Mr. Luxon advised on X.<\/p>\n
