Imagine navigating a world where gauging distance is a daily challenge, and the straightforward task of pouring water into a glass necessitates utmost focus. At a school volleyball match, you spot the ball and sprint towards it, but you’re consistently just a fraction of a second too late.<\/p>\n
Diplopia, or double vision, is a medical term used to describe the phenomenon of perceiving two images of a single object when attempting to view it. The primary reason behind binocular diplopia is the misalignment of the eye muscles. This condition, known as strabismus, can either be constant or intermittent. In most cases, if strabismus develops during early childhood, double vision may not occur, as children often learn to ‘turn off’ or ignore the double image through a process called suppression. In my situation, however, even from an early age, I experienced both double and blurred vision, reminiscent of the image I created above.<\/p>\n
At the age of three, I was diagnosed with strabismus, which led to my perception of everything as having a twin\u2014a condition medically referred to as diplopia. It is estimated that around 4% of the global population experiences this eye misalignment.<\/p>\n
Young children may adapt by suppressing one image, but for older children and adults, the mental effort required to manage even simple tasks can be overwhelming. Strabismus is a complex and often misunderstood condition that is seldom discussed openly.<\/p>\n
At twelve, I underwent a successful surgical procedure that restored my binocular vision. For many years, I buried those memories, acting as if I had never encountered that challenge. However, as I matured, I began to reflect on my past. I questioned whether my struggles in sports stemmed from my personality or my eyesight, whether my academic difficulties were due to my character or my impaired vision, and if anyone else had experienced similar feelings.<\/p>\n
Giulia, a young girl wearing bifocal glasses to address her accommodative strabismus, has faced challenges at school due to unkind classmates but has ultimately embraced her eyewear. Her mother shared a poignant moment when Giulia looked up at the sky and asked, “Mom, what’s that?” Upon learning it was the moon, her mother realized that before getting her new glasses, Giulia had never seen it clearly.<\/p>\n
The project “Wandering Star” delves into the complexities of strabismus, exploring how this physical condition relates to identity formation and the impact of visual discrepancies on the experiences of perception and visibility. By intertwining real-life accounts with reconstructed memories, the work merges my narrative with those of others.<\/p>\n
A family friend had observed that Vittoria’s eye seemed to turn inward, initiating a lengthy journey of medical assessments and eye examinations, which culminated in a diagnosis of latent strabismus, likely triggered by a viral infection. In retrospect, her parents recognized earlier signs such as reading difficulties, frequent eye rubbing, and challenges in maintaining eye contact in photographs.<\/p>\n
Instead of seeking a definitive solution, the project reflects on the social and psychological ramifications of having a different visual perspective. The title is inspired by a specific symbol used in binocular vision tests, a star that is unseen by those who lack binocular vision.<\/p>\n
Ayda, a 10-year-old girl who experienced accommodative strabismus, has seen significant improvement thanks to her regular use of glasses. Even when she removes them, the strabismus is no longer apparent. Early eye examinations led to her diagnosis of astigmatism combined with hyperopia (farsightedness). Timely intervention and consistent eyewear usage have alleviated the issue, which may diminish further as she grows. For Ayda, wearing glasses has never posed a problem; many of her friends wear them too, and she embraces her uniqueness as a positive trait.<\/p>\n
The initiative aims to raise awareness regarding the subtle stigma and lack of understanding associated with strabismus.<\/p>\n
Images include a young patient at the Studio Oculistico Paolo Nucci in Milan, where Professor Nucci specializes in pediatric eye disorders. One individual, a photographer who relies on contact lenses, views her diplopia as an integral aspect of her identity, expressing reluctance to undergo surgery for fear of losing a part of how she perceives the world. Another photograph captures her playful interaction with her vision, as she creatively maneuvered a ring onto her finger without physical contact.<\/p>\n
Throughout my research, I have spoken with numerous individuals, conducting in-depth interviews with 20 who shared poignant stories. These include a filmmaker who transformed his vision loss from amblyopia, known colloquially as “lazy eye,” into a source of creative strength, and whose son also required an eye patch, although early intervention preserved his sight; a mother recounting her child’s first experience of seeing the moon after receiving glasses at age five; and a woman who vividly remembers her surgery from the 1980s, during which she was blindfolded and unable to see for several consecutive days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
