A convicted gang rapist who escaped from custody while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in south-west Sydney has been apprehended by New South Wales Police following a five-day manhunt.<\/p>\n
Michael Angok absconded from Bankstown Hospital on foot shortly after 9:30 AM on Wednesday, having been transported there from Villawood Detention Centre for necessary medical care.<\/p>\n
An arrest warrant was issued by the Australian Federal Police the following day, leading to the establishment of Strike Force Tolquin to locate him.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, New South Wales Police announced that the 30-year-old was captured at Seven Hills at approximately 3:45 PM, at the intersection of Hartley Road and Terminus Road.<\/p>\n
“He has been taken to Blacktown Police Station, where further inquiries are ongoing,” the police statement indicated.<\/p>\n
At this time, no additional details have been released.<\/p>\n
Following Angok’s escape, various specialized units, including the Raptor Squad, PolAir, the Dog Unit, and the Operations Support Group, were mobilized to aid in the search for him.<\/p>\n
Authorities discovered some of his personal belongings discarded on Gallipoli Road, close to the hospital.<\/p>\n
The public was informed of the escape only the next day, as officials aimed to avoid causing unnecessary alarm. Detective Superintendent Brett Van Akker noted that they preferred not to alert the community prematurely, stating that “sometimes the public can hinder our investigation.”<\/p>\n
Angok was previously convicted for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in a park in Doonside in February 2014, alongside two accomplices. The victim reported that she had been walking through the park when a man approached her, overpowered her, and assaulted her.<\/p>\n
