Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, initially opposed deploying U.S. bases in the Iran conflict, later asserting that their use should be limited to \u201cdefensive\u201d operations. Concerns have arisen due to U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s military threats, perceived as potentially unlawful, alongside his critical attitude towards the UK and NATO, which has drawn attention to the role of these military sites in Britain.<\/p>\n
The leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, has suggested that the UK should rethink the presence of American bases as part of a broader reassessment of military alliances between the two nations. Questions remain regarding the actual locations and functions of these U.S. military bases and the extent of their control.<\/p>\n
A Pentagon report has identified 15 U.S. bases in the UK, excluding six smaller sites that are not significant enough to be included in the official count. By operating from this base rather than from the U.S., the Air Force significantly reduces the distance to their targets in Iran. Before a temporary ceasefire emerged, as many as four flights were leaving RAF Fairford daily.<\/p>\n
RAF Mildenhall, located in the flatlands of west Suffolk, is home to around 4,000 American military personnel and has been referred to by the U.S. Air Force as a \u201cpower projection platform.\u201d The base has actively supported bombing missions over Iran, utilizing a fleet of refueling aircraft that have conducted missions to sustain other U.S. military aircraft en route to and from Iran.<\/p>\n
RAF Lakenheath stands as the largest American base in the UK, situated among forests and farmland, serving as a small American enclave in East Anglia. With over 6,000 U.S. military personnel stationed there, the base hosts several fighter jet squadrons, including F-35s and F-15Es. Although many aircraft have been deployed to the Middle East, Lakenheath has also acted as a transit point for moving aircraft from the U.S. to the region.<\/p>\n
In recent years, there have been indications that the U.S. may have resumed storing nuclear weapons at Lakenheath, reminiscent of Cold War practices. While these weapons were removed in 2008, analysts suggest they may have returned last year, noting signs of their presence, though both U.S. and British authorities have neither confirmed nor denied this development.<\/p>\n
