Five courageous individuals responded to this call, becoming the first to be initiated into the Khalsa, which denotes purity and is derived from the Arabic term “Khalis.” These five men, known as the \u2018Panj Pyare\u2019 or ‘five beloved ones,’ hailed from diverse regions rather than solely from Punjab. Himmat Rai, a water-carrier, originated from Jagannath Puri in Orissa, whereas Mokham Chand, a tailor, came from Dwarka in Gujarat. Sahib Chand, a barber, was from Karnataka, and Dharam Das, a farmer, was from Hastinapur near Delhi. Only Daya Ram, a shopkeeper, represented the Punjab region. They all adopted the surname ‘Singh,’ meaning lion, thus forming the foundational members of this new order, which emphasized a unified identity.<\/p>\n
The Khalsa symbolizes a warrior prepared for just causes but also embodies a tradition that transcends barriers of discrimination. The representation of individuals from various regions and dialects illustrated the unity of “Akhand Bharat,” while the shared surname dismantled caste hierarchies. Guru Gobind Singh proclaimed, \u201cManas ki jaat sabhe eke pehchanbo,\u201d emphasizing that all humanity is one. This principle aligns with the concept of \u201cVasudhaiva Kutumbakam,\u201d a Sanskrit phrase that views the world as one family.<\/p>\n
Within the framework of the Mughal Empire, \u2018Khalsa\u2019 (pronounced Khalisah) signified \u2018crown land\u2019\u2014territory held directly by the emperor, bypassing intermediaries like jagirdars or mansabdars, with its revenue flowing directly to the imperial treasury. Bestowing the title of Khalsa upon commoners was a bold assertion against the ruling power, indicating that these followers owed their allegiance solely to God, free from the emperor\u2019s control.<\/p>\n
In medieval society, common individuals typically connected with the divine through intermediaries such as priests or monks, as the languages and rituals employed were often inaccessible to the general populace. This allowed these ‘messengers of God’ to potentially exploit the innocent, ensnaring them in complex and often misunderstood rituals.<\/p>\n
The establishment of the Khalsa aimed to diminish the influence of such clergy across various faiths. Sikhs were encouraged to refrain from bowing to any human being, reserving their reverence exclusively for their eternal Guru, the Guru Granth Sahib.<\/p>\n
Upon completing this significant chapter of his life, Guru Gobind Singh declared, \u201cKhalsa mero roop hai khaas, Khalsey meh hau karau niwas,\u201d signifying that the Khalsa is his true essence and that he resides within it. This declaration positioned the Khalsa as a vital force in the quest for justice, equality, and righteousness, ultimately empowering the oppressed, who would rise to govern their own land.<\/p>\n
The Sikh phrase \u2018Raj Karega Khalsa\u2019 does not refer to dominion by a specific community but instead signifies governance by the \u2018pure ones\u2019\u2014those guided by divine principles, unburdened by ritualism, superstition, and inequality.<\/p>\n
