Renowned vocalist Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Over her eight-decade career, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in nearly a dozen languages, leaving a lasting impact on the music industry. Many of her timeless tracks, such as “Dum Maaro Dum” from the 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna, continue to resonate with audiences today. This particular song, featuring a character portrayed by Zeenat Aman and set against the backdrop of the burgeoning hippie culture, highlighted the troubling influence of drug use on youth. Despite its intent to criticize, the song inadvertently glamorized the very issues it sought to condemn, quickly becoming an anthem for a generation. At the time, it faced considerable backlash, leading to its temporary ban by All India Radio and Doordarshan. Composed by RD Burman, who later married Asha in 1980, the song remains a beloved classic even in 2026.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, “Dum Maaro Dum” was initially planned as a duet featuring Lata Mangeshkar and Usha Uthup, intended to be filmed with both Zeenat Aman and Mumtaz. However, Lata’s unexpected withdrawal paved the way for Asha to take her place. Ultimately, the song became synonymous with Asha, although Usha contributed English lyrics that also gained popularity.<\/p>\n
Dev Anand, the film’s producer and director, expressed uncertainty even after the song was recorded, anticipating potential backlash. He noted initial hesitations from SD Burman, RD’s father and his frequent collaborator. To mitigate controversy, he contemplated omitting the song. Upon learning of this decision, Asha took it upon herself to persuade Dev. \u201cI was extremely upset and headed straight to director Dev saab\u2019s house. I told him it\u2019s a wonderful number and should be retained at any cost. He thought for some time and said, since you are saying so, I shall,\u201d she recounted in a 2020 interview with The Hindu.<\/p>\n
As expected, the song stirred controversy upon its release. While it faced a ban on All India Radio, it was freely played on Radio Ceylon, which featured the popular Binaca Geetmala. The song dominated the charts for an impressive 12 weeks and was eventually honored as ‘Sartaj Geet.’ Despite being banned on Doordarshan for several years and edited out of film broadcasts, Asha reflected on the challenges surrounding the song in a 2003 interview with Rediff, stating, \u201cIn those days, I had to face a lot of criticism. My song \u2018Dum maro dum\u2019 was banned by the [Indian] government. It would not be played on radio. And if the film was shown on television \u2013 at that time, there was only one channel, Doordarshan \u2013 the song would be cut.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the initial criticism, “Dum Maaro Dum” has endured through the years and is celebrated as one of Asha Bhosle’s most iconic songs.<\/p>\n
