A high-ranking official from the Mauritian government has expressed determination to achieve the “decolonisation” of the Chagos Islands following the UK government’s decision to delay legislation aimed at returning the islands to Mauritius. In light of the failed initiative to voluntarily transfer control of the islands, Dhananjay Ramful, Mauritius’s Foreign Minister, addressed an Indian Ocean conference in Mauritius, asserting that his government is committed to regaining authority over the territory. He stated, “We will spare no effort to pursue any diplomatic or legal channels to finalize the decolonisation process. This is fundamentally an issue of justice,” as reported by the Sunday Telegraph.<\/p>\n
This recent development represents another hurdle in the UK’s efforts to return the Chagos Islands, which are home to the US-UK Diego Garcia military base, to Mauritius. It also reflects the weakening relations between the US and the UK, particularly after Trump publicly criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer regarding the situation in Iran.<\/p>\n
Trump had previously voiced his disapproval of the Chagos proposal, which had received support from the US State Department, warning Starmer that he would be “making a big mistake” by ceding sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius while allowing the continued operation of the airbase. Although Trump later offered conditional support, the UK was ultimately compelled to withdraw the legislation after failing to secure US approval in the form of a letter exchange to modify a 1966 treaty concerning the islands. The anticipated Chagos legislation is now unlikely to be included in the King’s speech scheduled for May, where the government’s future agenda will be outlined.<\/p>\n
Officially designated as the British Indian Ocean Territory, the Chagos Islands have been under UK administration since the 19th century. In a 2019 ruling, the International Court of Justice determined that the UK’s separation of the islands from Mauritius prior to its independence in 1968 was unlawful. This action resulted in the forcible removal of thousands of island residents to facilitate the establishment of the military base.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the UK government emphasized the strategic importance of Diego Garcia, stating, “It is a critical military asset for both the UK and the US. Ensuring its long-term operational security remains our top priority, which is the fundamental reason behind the agreement.” The spokesperson reiterated that the continuation of the deal would depend on securing US support.<\/p>\n
The previous agreement, reached with former President Joe Biden, would have involved the UK relinquishing sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while leasing the airbase back for 99 years at a cost of approximately \u00a335 billion. Simon McDonald, a former permanent under-secretary at the Foreign Office, remarked on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the government had “no other choice” but to suspend the agreement, noting that the US president’s open hostility necessitated a reevaluation of the treaty.<\/p>\n
Gavin Glover, the Attorney General of Mauritius, indicated that the outcome was expected, attributing the delay to the strained dynamics between Trump and Starmer. In response to the situation, Health Secretary Wes Streeting denied that the UK’s proposal to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was dead.
