SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel asserted that the United States lacks a legitimate basis for a military intervention in Cuba or for attempting to unseat him from power.<\/p>\n
In a recent interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press, D\u00edaz-Canel warned that any invasion would not only be financially burdensome but would also jeopardize stability in the region. He emphasized that if such an event were to occur, the Cuban people would rise to defend their nation.<\/p>\n
“Should that time come, I believe there would be no justification for the United States to initiate military aggression against Cuba, nor for it to engage in surgical strikes or the abduction of a president,” he stated, using a translator for clarity.<\/p>\n
D\u00edaz-Canel further declared, “In the face of such actions, there will be resistance, and we will stand firm. If necessary, we will sacrifice our lives, as our national anthem proclaims, ‘To die for the homeland is to live’.”<\/p>\n
His remarks come amidst ongoing tensions between Cuba and the U.S., despite both nations recognizing the potential for dialogue, the specifics of which have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n
The president has criticized the U.S. for what he describes as a “hostile policy” aimed at Cuba, asserting that the U.S. has no moral authority to make demands of the island. He expressed Cuba’s willingness to engage in discussions on any subject without preconditions, adding, “We do not seek changes in the American system, despite having numerous concerns about it.”<\/p>\n
Cuba holds the U.S. responsible for its escalating difficulties, particularly citing an energy blockade that has severely impacted the country’s healthcare system, public transport, and the production of goods and services.<\/p>\n
Currently, Cuba generates only 40% of its fuel needs and has faced disruptions in oil shipments from Venezuela, especially following a U.S. military operation in January that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, who was subsequently taken to New York to face drug trafficking charges. The Trump administration initiated a phased strategy to address Venezuela’s ongoing crisis with the aid of local political leaders.<\/p>\n
A significant development occurred in March when a Russian tanker delivered 730,000 barrels of crude oil to Cuba, marking the island’s first oil shipment in three months. Russia has committed to sending an additional tanker in the near future.<\/p>\n
Despite announcing potential tariffs in January against nations supplying oil to Cuba, the Trump administration permitted the arrival of the tanker.<\/p>\n
“Cuba’s finished,” remarked President Donald Trump at the time. “They have a bad regime with corrupt leadership, and whether they receive a shipment of oil or not will not change that fact.”<\/p>\n
D\u00edaz-Canel indicated that his administration interprets Trump’s comments as a cautionary message.<\/p>\n
“We hear that Cuba is next on their list, that there are plans to take control of Cuba,” he said. “From our position of responsibility as leaders, this serves as a warning.
