On a bright winter morning near the beaches of Bronte in Sydney, a well-dressed individual walks along a busy pathway. The pleasant weather has attracted a significant number of people, and as he makes his way through the crowd, he skillfully navigates around surfers with their boards, mothers with strollers, and a variety of other pedestrians.<\/p>\n
His friendly demeanor prompts smiles and nods from those he encounters, though no one appears to recognize him.<\/p>\n
“I’m Martin Green from the University of New South Wales in Sydney,” he shares in an interview with ABC at his nearby residence. “I’ve dedicated over 50 years to researching solar cells and have achieved some success in both technology development and commercialization.”<\/p>\n
Many consider Green the pioneer of modern solar technology, being responsible for the technology found in 90% of the solar panels used worldwide today.<\/p>\n
The rapid growth in solar energy adoption can be attributed to fundamental economic principles of supply and demand. Since the late 1970s, the price of solar energy has decreased by a staggering factor of 400, largely due to intense competition among Chinese manufacturers, resulting in an oversupply and significant price reductions. This affordability has led to a remarkable surge in installations of solar technology, consistently exceeding expectations.<\/p>\n
Alan Finkel, Australia\u2019s former chief scientist and top energy advisor, asserts that none of this progress would have been feasible without Martin Green, who has arguably made the most significant contributions to solar research. Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull notes that Green is “one of the few individuals who truly facilitated the shift towards renewable energy.” Zhengrong Shi, a former student of Green and the world’s first solar billionaire, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that the current state of the global solar industry is largely attributable to Green’s influence.<\/p>\n
So why does Green remain largely unrecognized in his own country, especially in his adopted hometown?<\/p>\n
Turnbull suggests that this anonymity is not accidental. “He is, by nature, a bit reserved,” the former PM points out. “There\u2019s no flashy Elon Musk type figure in the photovoltaics sector at UNSW.” Renate Egan, a professor at UNSW who leads the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics, adds that understanding Green requires recognizing his identity as a scientist first and foremost.<\/p>\n
“Martin commenced his solar energy research in 1974, at a time when the idea of using solar power to energize our homes was merely a concept,” Egan explains. “Hailing from Brisbane, Green embodies the spirit of the Sunshine Coast, which is what drew me to solar energy as well \u2014 the desire to contribute positively to science in Australia.”<\/p>\n
During Green’s early days in solar research, the field was still developing, with limited resources and low expectations. Egan notes that the initial oil crisis in 1973 sparked some interest in solar energy, but as the crisis subsided, so did investments in alternative energy, with a notable exception for solar power in space applications.<\/p>\n
“In space, there was a consistent need for solar energy, which kept research going,” she points out.<\/p>\n
Green notes that space missions had unexpectedly proven the viability of solar technology. “The fourth satellite ever launched, which was the second one from the US, was equipped with solar cells that performed exceptionally well,” he recalls. “In fact, they functioned so effectively that the satellite continued to transmit signals for six or seven years, cluttering the airwaves because there was no off switch.”<\/p>\n
Despite the successful early applications of photovoltaic cells, significant challenges remained. Green explains that the production costs were prohibitively high, leaving solar technology on the fringes of the energy market. “The cells were incredibly expensive, and the quantities produced for satellites were minimal,” he says. “In those days, nuclear energy was held in high regard, and one notable nuclear scientist remarked that solar’s impact would be like a flea on an elephant’s back in the future energy landscape, reflecting the skepticism surrounding its potential.”<\/p>\n
The second oil crisis, triggered by the Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s, revitalized interest in solar research as governments worldwide invested heavily in alternative energy initiatives. President Jimmy Carter famously installed solar panels on the White House during this time.<\/p>\n
Amidst this renewed focus, Green and his colleagues made significant breakthroughs that would ultimately address the cost issues plaguing solar technology.
