Asha Bhosle, the renowned singer, passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday, April 12. Over her remarkable career spanning nearly eight decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in almost 24 different languages. Notably, Asha was among the few Indian vocalists to collaborate with international artists, yet she openly acknowledged her lack of fluency in English. In 1990, she teamed up with British singer Boy George to create a song influenced by his experiences in India. The track, named \u201cBow Down Mister,\u201d sparked some controversy in India but also helped introduce Asha to a broader international audience.<\/p>\n
In a 2012 interview with Rediff, Asha reflected on her collaboration with Boy George, mentioning her struggles with the English language. She recounted how, during a performance, he asked her the meaning of \u201cChura Liya Hai Tumne\u201d in his thick accent, which left her momentarily fumbling for a response. \u201cI still don\u2019t know English because we went to vernacular medium schools,\u201d she explained. Eventually, she managed to convey that it meant \u201cI have stolen your heart,\u201d which made him blush.<\/p>\n
Asha performed alongside Boy George at her concert in Wembley in 2000, where he described the experience as \u201cthe most perfect song I have ever done,\u201d recalling it as one of the happiest moments of his life, a song he cherished deeply.<\/p>\n
In various past interviews, Asha shared insights about her close relationship with her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar. The two were inseparable during their childhood, with Lata taking Asha to school until a teacher intervened, prompting Lata to stop attending school altogether in protest.<\/p>\n
Asha eventually transferred to another school in Kolhapur. A few years ago, she shared memories from that time, recalling her mischievous nature and her early passion for singing. \u201cI was very, very naughty in my childhood,\u201d she reminisced, adding that her teachers often requested impromptu performances from her, which she gladly provided.<\/p>\n
Asha began her professional singing career at the tender age of 10 following the death of her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar.<\/p>\n
