The government is set to introduce significant changes to the food standards in schools across England, which will result in the prohibition of high-calorie staples like fish and chips and steamed puddings.<\/p>\n
These updated regulations mark the first substantial revision of school food standards in over a decade and are scheduled to take effect in September. This initiative aims to combat the rising prevalence of childhood obesity, with recent data from the NHS indicating that 24% of children in nurseries and primary schools were categorized as overweight or obese in 2024.<\/p>\n
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson characterized the forthcoming changes as \u201cthe most ambitious overhaul of school food in a generation.\u201d She emphasized that \u201cEvery child deserves access to tasty, nutritious meals at school that provide the energy necessary for focus, learning, and overall development. The goal is to serve meals that children recognize and enjoy, supported by stringent compliance to ensure that high standards translate into quality food served on plates.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some of the new regulations, set to be implemented by September 2027, will require that all school desserts contain a minimum of 50% fruit, casting doubt on the future of items like steamed sponges and jam doughnuts. Additionally, all deep-fried foods, including battered fish and chicken nuggets, will be banned.<\/p>\n
Henry Dimbleby, a co-founder of the Leon restaurant chain and co-author of the previous 2013 school food plan, referred to the new standards as \u201ca rare opportunity to revamp school food.\u201d Currently, schools are permitted to serve two portions of deep-fried foods weekly and desserts with less than 50% fruit three times a week.<\/p>\n
Dimbleby expressed optimism about the changes, stating they would enhance \u201caccess to free school meals and elevate standards, coupled with effective monitoring to assist schools in improving the meals served.\u201d However, he emphasized that success would depend on the commitment from both the government and educational institutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeptember can herald a new era where every child can rely on a lunch that is both appealing and nutritious, and parents can trust what is being served,\u201d he stated. \u201cIf implemented correctly, this initiative will enhance children’s health, academic performance, and future success.\u201d<\/p>\n
In reaction to these new standards, five prominent organizations in the education and food sectors have collaborated to form the School Food Project. This initiative aims to offer practical assistance to schools in delivering healthier and higher-quality meals.<\/p>\n
The project, which includes partnerships with Bite Back, Chefs in Schools, the Jamie Oliver Group, School Food Matters, and The Food Foundation, has successfully raised \u00a32.3 million through donations. It plans to launch in September 2026 to align with the finalization and publication of the new standards.<\/p>\n
Chef Jamie Oliver, who has advocated for improved food quality for children for over twenty years, expressed his satisfaction with the government\u2019s decision to revise and enforce standards, labeling school food as \u201cthe most important restaurant chain\u201d in the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo decades ago, the standards for dog food were higher than those for school dinners,\u201d he noted. \u201cStarting in September, during the school term, institutions will provide two-thirds of a child\u2019s daily dietary needs\u2014an enormous opportunity to enhance health on a large scale.\u201d<\/p>\n
D\u2019Arcy Williams, the CEO of Bite Back, a youth-led organization advocating for healthier school meals, commended the announcement as a \u201clong-overdue advancement in improving the food that young people depend on daily.\u201d He acknowledged, however, that significant work remains and cautioned that \u201cthe magnitude of the challenge cannot be overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Williams remarked, \u201cIt is concerning that so many children are consuming excessive sugar, and that a significant number of parents are worried about their children\u2019s diets. The current system has proven inadequate. Although we have established standards designed to safeguard children\u2019s health, the lack of effective monitoring and accountability has hindered consistent enforcement.
