Cyclone Vaianu made its way onto New Zealand’s North Island on Sunday, resulting in severe flooding, widespread power outages, and necessitating the evacuation of hundreds of residents.<\/p>\n
The cyclone made landfall near the Maketu peninsula, bringing with it damaging winds that surpassed 130 km\/h (80 mph), along with heavy rainfall and significant swells. The national meteorological agency, MetService, has characterized Vaianu as a “life-threatening” weather event.<\/p>\n
In response to the impending danger, officials have declared emergencies in several areas and issued “red” level wind warnings, which are designated for the most severe weather conditions.<\/p>\n
The cyclone is moving along the outskirts of the North Island, allowing Auckland, the nation\u2019s largest city, to avoid the worst of the storm’s effects, according to emergency management minister Mark Mitchell. However, he noted that stronger winds and swells were still anticipated following the cyclone\u2019s afternoon landfall.<\/p>\n
Mitchell stated, “The cyclone has shifted eastward and onto the fringes, which means we have not experienced the intensity we had prepared for or previously expected. This is encouraging news.” He also mentioned, “As the cyclone approaches, we may see some intensification in the next 12 hours.”<\/p>\n
He cautioned that the combination of high tide in the afternoon and large waves generated by the storm could lead to coastal flooding. “The critical period will be from 2 PM (0800 GMT) onwards when high tides coincide with these significant swells,” he added.<\/p>\n
As a result of the cyclone, hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate, and around 5,000 households have lost power, though electricity has been restored to about 2,000 of those homes.<\/p>\n
In the coastal Whakatane District, authorities reported considerable damage caused by Vaianu, leading to mandatory evacuations of 270 properties. Members of the New Zealand defense force and heavy machinery have been deployed to aid in the evacuation efforts.<\/p>\n
MetService reported wind gusts of 130 km\/h in certain areas, with rainfall totals exceeding 100 mm (4 inches) over 24 hours in Whangarei, and wave heights surpassing 6 meters (20 feet).<\/p>\n
Air New Zealand announced the cancellation of over 90 turboprop flights, mainly from regional airports in the North Island. However, the airline confirmed that domestic jet and international flights were operating as scheduled, albeit with some delays due to weather conditions.<\/p>\n
Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to more than 100 calls for help related to wind damage and flooding on surfaces.<\/p>\n
Conditions are expected to improve as Vaianu continues its path down the North Island, exiting at Hawke\u2019s Bay on Sunday evening, according to MetService.<\/p>\n
Heather Keats, head of weather news at MetService, noted, “Conditions will start to improve tonight and into tomorrow, but for now, this remains a life-threatening weather system.”<\/p>\n
