As fuel prices continue to soar due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, agricultural and fishing sectors are confronted with challenging decisions to maintain their operations. Farmers are urging supermarkets to alleviate some of the financial strain, while government officials are advising consumers against panic buying.<\/p>\n
Producers at the Capital Region Farmers Market in Canberra are beginning to feel the impact of rising costs. This market serves as a central point for growers and producers from both the local area and the New South Wales coast. Some vendors are opting to increase their prices and reduce their travel distances, while others are facing uncertainty about the upcoming year.<\/p>\n
Vicki Abbott, who operates Narooma Seafoods, reported that her business has had to raise prices by 50 cents per kilogram to accommodate the rising fuel costs. “Our boat carries 40,000 litres of fuel, and we consume approximately 30,000 litres each month, leading to an additional expense of around $10,000 weekly,” Ms. Abbott explained. The necessity for longer fishing trips is being reconsidered as costs rise. “We’ve determined not to embark on longer journeys, which means we’ll focus on catching closer to shore, targeting species like marlin and tuna instead,” she noted.<\/p>\n
Narooma Seafoods distributes its catch to markets in Moruya, Sydney, and Canberra. Ms. Abbott expressed hope that her company can endure the current situation, citing the advantage of operating just one boat. “We are in a more favorable position than many other businesses, some of which operate multiple boats. With restricted fuel access in some areas, those companies may be forced to rely on a single vessel, leading to crew layoffs,” she added.<\/p>\n
The challenges are also affecting smaller local producers, such as Rahmatullah Jafari, who spends four hours driving to sell his pomegranates while relying on diesel for his machinery. “The rise in diesel prices has been significant, which has made things difficult,” he remarked. Despite this, Mr. Jafari has been cautious about passing these increased costs onto his customers. “I want to keep my customers happy, but I\u2019m unsure how long I can maintain current pricing,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Caroline O’Clery, who grows olives on her small farm, mentioned that she collects diesel in jerry cans during her trips to town. “People might think I’m hoarding,” she said. “However, I\u2019m just trying to ensure my tractors are fueled for the upcoming harvest next month.”<\/p>\n
The rising fuel costs are also impacting fertilizer availability, as Paul de Jong, a seedling grower, noted that his expenses have gone up by approximately 10 percent. He expressed concern about potential fertilizer shortages, particularly since the slow-release fertilizer he uses is imported from the U.S. “I\u2019m in discussions with suppliers who are currently limiting access, and I’m attempting to stock up on fertilizer as early as possible, but they expect shortages,” Mr. de Jong added.<\/p>\n
Similarly, potato farmer Luke Bartlett is worried about the implications that fertilizer shortages could have on future crops. “Our main concern for the next season is whether we can secure fertilizer supplies,” he said. He has observed that even customers looking to purchase seed from him are hesitant due to rising fuel and fertilizer costs. “This situation is likely to affect the entire supply chain,” he warned.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bartlett has already raised his prices this season to offset the increased costs. “As we begin harvesting, we are acutely aware of the high fuel prices, which significantly affect our operations,” he explained.
