An investigation into the tragic and preventable deaths of infants in Sussex is at risk of failing to extract crucial lessons, as it has reportedly \u201csystematically\u201d sidelined numerous families, according to warnings issued to Health Secretary Wes Streeting prior to his upcoming meeting with grieving parents.<\/p>\n
The Health Secretary has initiated a review concerning nine infant fatalities at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, amid a series of maternity care controversies across England. Nevertheless, families are urging Streeting to broaden the scope of the investigation to encompass over 60 additional infants who perished between 2019 and 2023, potentially due to inadequate medical care.<\/p>\n
Dr. Marija Pantelic, a public health specialist whose baby, Sasha, died in the care of the UH Sussex in January 2022, expressed concern that the limited focus and opt-in nature of the review pose significant risks. She believes it will reflect the experiences of a predominantly \u201cwhite and British\u201d demographic of parents, which could lead to dangerous oversights.<\/p>\n
Pantelic, whose child is part of the review, plans to voice her concerns directly to Streeting during his meeting with bereaved families on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Parents are advocating for a more comprehensive investigation led by Donna Ockenden, a senior midwife who is currently overseeing maternity inquiries into preventable deaths at NHS trusts in Nottingham and Leeds. They emphasize the importance of actively reaching out to affected families, rather than relying solely on the nine cases that have come to light.<\/p>\n
Pantelic, who serves as an associate professor in public health with a focus on health disparities, highlighted that it should be a red flag for Streeting that the review is primarily based on feedback from families that are predominantly \u201cwhite and British.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the perspective is limited to specific groups, then only certain issues will be recognized,\u201d she noted. \u201cFor example, if the feedback is solely from white families, systemic racism may go unrecognized. A failure to identify the true sources of harm will lead to inadequate solutions, which may even exacerbate the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Official statistics reveal that Black women in the UK are more than twice as likely to experience fatal outcomes during childbirth compared to their white counterparts, with women of Asian descent also facing elevated risks.<\/p>\n
Pantelic cautioned that the current opt-in format of the Sussex review could \u201csystematically exclude those who are least equipped to navigate the system, and who are most likely to have suffered harm.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201cThis creates a dangerous misrepresentation. Those most at risk are often the least represented in the available data, which leads to an underestimation of harm and a misunderstanding of its root causes. Incorrectly identifying the causes will result in ineffective solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, UH Sussex announced the hiring of 40 new midwives, claiming to have \u201celiminated\u201d the vacancy rate that contributed to several of the preventable fatalities. Families are worried that this response indicates the NHS trust believes understaffing is the primary issue, overlooking larger systemic problems.<\/p>\n
Pantelic asserted, \u201cUntil the real causes of these avoidable deaths are accurately determined, proposed remedies will likely miss their targets. The individuals included in a review significantly influence what issues are recognized and what is perceived to be the underlying problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care commented, \u201cFamilies have faced unacceptable failures in maternity care, and we are dedicated to ensuring that the review process itself does not exacerbate their suffering. Their experiences and preferences will inform a review that they can trust, which will be evidence-based and specifically tailored to Sussex.
