A judge has dismissed Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, owned by News Corporation and Rupert Murdoch. The lawsuit stemmed from an article discussing a sexually suggestive letter purportedly included in a 2003 album for Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday.<\/p>\n
In his decision, Judge Darrin Gayles indicated that Trump has the option to submit a revised version of his complaint by April 27. The lawsuit claimed that the Wall Street Journal’s reporting damaged Trump’s reputation, as he and his legal team asserted that the card in question was a fabrication, despite its release being linked to investigations into Epstein.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Miami-based District Judge Gayles ruled that the article did not satisfy the “actual malice” standard required for public figures in defamation cases. This standard necessitates proof not only that a statement was false but also that the outlet or individual responsible for the statement was aware, or should have been aware, of its falsity.<\/p>\n
Judge Gayles remarked, “This complaint comes nowhere close to this standard. Quite the opposite.” However, he allowed for the possibility of further legal action by permitting Trump to refile his lawsuit.<\/p>\n
The judge noted that the reporters from the Wall Street Journal had contacted Trump for a response prior to publishing the article and included his denial, which provided readers with the opportunity to draw their own conclusions\u2014contradicting Trump’s claim of actual malice on the part of the newspaper.<\/p>\n
Neither Trump\u2019s legal representatives nor the White House provided immediate comments on the ruling. Trump’s lawsuit labeled the alleged birthday greeting as “fake” and sought $10 billion in damages for reputational harm.<\/p>\n
News Corp’s Dow Jones, the parent company of the Journal, defended the accuracy of the article published on July 17, 2025. This lawsuit is one among several that Trump, a Republican, has initiated against major media organizations during his presidency, concerning what he perceives as misleading or unjust reporting.<\/p>\n
This has raised concerns among Democrats and advocates for press freedom regarding his intentions to use defamation claims to suppress critical media coverage. In September, lawyers for the Journal and Murdoch requested that Judge Gayles dismiss the case, arguing that the lawsuit posed a threat to the free speech of those publishing content unfavorable to Trump.<\/p>\n
