Daniil Medvedev, a former world No. 1, has been penalized 6,000 euros (approximately $7,000) for unsportsmanlike behavior following a match at the Monte Carlo Masters where he lost to Matteo Berrettini with a score of 6-0, 6-0. The ATP Tour confirmed the fine to The Associated Press on Monday.<\/p>\n
Currently ranked 10th in the world, Medvedev received a code violation from the chair umpire due to his actions during the early part of the second set in the match, which took place last Wednesday.<\/p>\n
This fine is relatively minor compared to the penalties of $76,000 and $42,500 he faced for similar outbursts at the Australian Open and U.S. Open, respectively, last year.<\/p>\n
Medvedev, who had received a bye in the first round, had already secured 45,520 euros ($50,000) in prize money from the tournament in Monte Carlo.<\/p>\n
The 30-year-old athlete was already facing difficulties when he hit a forehand into the net, resulting in the loss of his opening service game in the second set, putting him down 2-0. In response, he smashed his racket near the baseline and subsequently threw it toward a tarp at the end of the court.<\/p>\n
Continuing his frustration, Medvedev repeatedly struck his racket until it was damaged enough to fit into a nearby trash can, as the crowd reacted with sarcastic cheers.<\/p>\n
