The National Energy System Operator (Neso) aims to issue market notices that prompt energy consumers to increase their usage, thereby preventing costly payments required to curtail wind and solar farm operations during times of reduced demand, costs that ultimately reflect on consumer bills.<\/p>\n
This initiative may gain traction this summer as households prepare for an increase in the government\u2019s cap on dual fuel energy bills, projected to approach \u00a32,000 annually starting in July amid rising energy market prices linked to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n
Neso’s strategy comes as the summer season is anticipated to deliver unprecedented levels of renewable energy, potentially marking the first summer where the grid operates solely on zero-carbon electricity.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, Great Britain set dual solar power records, with the sunny spring weather leading to exceptional solar energy output on consecutive days. This solar achievement followed a record high in wind energy generation, which pushed gas-fired electricity production to its lowest in two years. Additionally, Great Britain is expected to become a net importer of electricity from Europe, where nuclear and renewable energy production is projected to be high this summer.<\/p>\n
The prospect of abundant low-carbon electricity means that a sunny and breezy summer weekend could overwhelm portions of the electricity system with renewable energy, potentially increasing the risk of unplanned blackouts due to bottlenecks in the national electricity grids.<\/p>\n

Neso’s summer outlook does not provide insights into market prices and does not foresee major changes to Britain’s gas security during the summer months.
