Following the sentencing of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro to nearly 30 years in prison for his involvement in an attempted coup, six of his cabinet members received similar rulings and began serving their sentences, with the exception of one individual.<\/p>\n
Just days prior to the court’s decision, Alexandre Ramagem, who previously served as Bolsonaro’s intelligence chief, escaped to Guyana by car and subsequently flew to the United States, where he has remained since that time.<\/p>\n
This past Monday, Ramagem was apprehended by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) amidst an ongoing immigration enforcement initiative led by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Ramagem, a former member of Brazil’s federal police, was sentenced to 16 years in prison after the country\u2019s supreme court established that he had transformed the Brazilian intelligence agency into a secretive counterintelligence operation to unlawfully surveil individuals considered adversaries of Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n
Investigations revealed that he had implemented surveillance software to track the geolocation of supreme court justices, lawmakers, journalists, and other public figures. He also kept tabs on investigations involving Bolsonaro\u2019s children, notably Senator Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, who is positioning himself as a prominent opposition candidate in the upcoming presidential election following his father’s incarceration.<\/p>\n
As a consequence of his conviction, Ramagem was dismissed from his role in the federal police and lost his congressional mandate in Brazil’s lower house.<\/p>\n
In an effort to influence the proceedings against his ally Bolsonaro, Trump had attempted to impose additional tariffs on Brazil, while various supporters of the far-right Brazilian leader have sought asylum in the United States.<\/p>\n
While living as a fugitive in the U.S., Ramagem participated in a live stream hosted by a far-right Brazilian influencer, during which he asserted that he had received “approval” from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
In a live stream last November, Ramagem claimed to have received a communication from someone within the Trump administration stating, “It\u2019s good to know we have a friend who is safe and secure here in the U.S.”<\/p>\n
Although Brazil formally submitted a request for his extradition in December, Brazilian federal police indicated that his detention was related to immigration issues. He is currently listed as “in custody” in the ICE detainee database, with no further information about his whereabouts.<\/p>\n
Paulo Figueiredo, a far-right Brazilian businessman and social media influencer residing in the U.S., reported on social media that Ramagem was detained following a police stop in Orlando, initially for a minor traffic violation before being referred to ICE.<\/p>\n
Figueiredo noted that Ramagem has a pending asylum application that was filed some time ago and is still under review, which permits him to remain legally in the U.S. until a final decision is reached. Figueiredo himself has faced accusations related to the coup attempt but has not been tried, as Brazilian judicial authorities have struggled to serve him while he has lived in the U.S. for several years.<\/p>\n
Andrei Rodrigues, the head of Brazil’s federal police, commented to GloboNews, “The arrest is the result of international cooperation between Brazil and the U.S. in combating organized crime.
