Crossin served five terms in the Australian Senate from 1998 to 2013, a time marked by significant social challenges in the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has honored Crossin’s legacy, describing her as a “trailblazer” who committed herself to serving her community with “strength, decency, and pride.”<\/p>\n
Originally a schoolteacher in Arnhem Land, Crossin broke new ground as the first female senator representing the Northern Territory. Her political career was characterized by a strong commitment to advocating for women’s rights and the rights of First Nations people within unions and political spheres.<\/p>\n
During her early political career, which was largely influenced by the Liberal government under John Howard, Crossin emerged as a passionate and influential representative for the Northern Territory during a turbulent era that included the initiation of the NT Emergency Response.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Albanese expressed his condolences, noting Crossin’s dedication to creating opportunities for the people of the Northern Territory. He stated, “She brought that same determination and those same values to the Senate. As the first woman to represent the NT in Parliament, Trish was a trailblazer. What drove her was making that trail easier for future generations to follow.”<\/p>\n
Among her notable achievements, Crossin played a crucial role in founding the NT Working Women’s Centre and fought against the closure of First Nations bilingual schools in the region.<\/p>\n
Chansey Paech, the Member for Gwoja, praised Crossin as a “passionate advocate” and a “strong voice for Territorians who deeply cared about people in the territory.” He emphasized her commitment to education reform, her advocacy for the Stolen Generations, and her dedication to environmental issues and workers’ rights.<\/p>\n
Crossin began her career as a senior teacher at Yirrkala Bilingual School in northeast Arnhem Land from 1981 to 1985, where she was highly regarded by the Yolngu community. Kathy McMahon, a fellow teacher, described her as a “really good teacher” who was supportive and always sought to uplift the territory.<\/p>\n
Crossin’s contributions to education coincided with a transformative time for north-east Arnhem Land, during which she formed close friendships with influential Yolngu educators Yalmay and Mandawuy Yunupingu.<\/p>\n
Her tenure in the Senate concluded in 2013 when she was unexpectedly replaced by former athlete Nova Peris, a decision made by then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard.<\/p>\n
