According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia, the summer season in Sydney has grown significantly, extending by nearly 50 days since 1990. This analysis examined weather data from ten mid-latitude cities worldwide, revealing that, on average, summer is lengthening by approximately 15 days every decade.<\/p>\n
The findings indicate that Sydney’s rate of warming is more than twice that of many other cities studied, including well-known locations such as Tokyo, Paris, Reykjav\u00edk, and St. Petersburg. The research specifically focused on the duration of summer, defined by temperature rather than specific dates, and identified Sydney as having the most considerable increase in summer days among the cities analyzed.<\/p>\n
Lead researcher Ted Scott noted that the data suggests the summers in Sydney have lengthened by about 15 days per decade since 1990, compared to the period from 1961 to 1990. “In simpler terms, over the span of 20 years, Sydney has effectively added an entire month to its summer season,” he explained. He cautioned that, while the trends observed up to 2023 indicate a clear direction, the future trajectory remains uncertain.<\/p>\n
Scott emphasized that Sydney stands out among the ten cities studied due to the dramatic changes it is experiencing. The only other city with a comparable increase in summer length is Minneapolis, which has seen an additional nine days every decade since 1990.<\/p>\n
The research also highlighted that Sydney’s summers are not only lasting longer but are also becoming more intense, suggesting a notable shift in climate patterns. “Human-induced climate change is significantly affecting the warmest season of the year,” Scott remarked, noting that his personal experiences align with the research findings regarding the changing nature of summers.<\/p>\n
A recent analysis by ABC further supports these findings, indicating that other Australian cities, such as Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, are also experiencing longer summers. Canberra, in particular, has been noted for having summer-like temperatures arriving a full month earlier than observed in the 1960s.<\/p>\n
Penny Sharpe, New South Wales Minister for Climate Change and Energy, commented on the research, stating it underscores the pressing reality of climate change. She emphasized the importance of reducing emissions and implementing adaptation measures, such as increasing tree canopy coverage to help cool urban areas during longer and hotter summer periods.<\/p>\n
