As the United States prepares to implement a blockade on vessels navigating to or from Iranian ports via the Strait of Hormuz, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri engaged in discussions with Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, on strategies to ensure freedom of navigation in the region.<\/p>\n
This dialogue coincided with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s conversation with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, where they also addressed the ongoing regional circumstances.<\/p>\n
During his visit to Paris, Misri and Barrot underscored the necessity of adhering to the ceasefire agreement established between Iran and the United States and stressed the importance of achieving a prompt and sustainable resolution to the conflict through diplomatic avenues. The French Foreign Ministry released a statement highlighting their discussions on restoring navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that consultations between India and France took place in Paris, co-chaired by Misri and Martin Briens, the Secretary-General of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Misri also held a meeting with Emmanuel Bonne, the Diplomatic Advisor to the French President.<\/p>\n
The MEA statement indicated that both nations conducted a thorough assessment of advancements in their bilateral relationship, particularly regarding the elevation of ties to a Special Global Strategic Partnership and the upcoming visit of President Macron to India in February 2026.<\/p>\n
The discussions also encompassed significant deliverables, including the India-France Year of Innovation, collaboration on economic security, and efforts to increase the flow of STEM talent, with a focus on boosting the number of Indian students studying in France. They also aimed to double bilateral trade, particularly in light of the recently concluded negotiations concerning the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.<\/p>\n
Topics of cooperation included strategic areas such as defense, civil nuclear energy, space exploration, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, institutional dialogue mechanisms, and initiatives to strengthen cultural exchanges. Additionally, the two sides discussed global issues, including environmental cooperation, climate change, health, and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region, along with trilateral dialogues and joint development projects in third countries, as well as the situations in West Asia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Misri and Briens agreed to reconvene for the Strategic Space Dialogue, which is scheduled for later this year. The French readout noted that, as India collaborates closely with the French G7 Presidency, they explored potential responses to address significant macroeconomic imbalances and promote a more inclusive form of multilateralism.<\/p>\n
In New Delhi, Jaishankar held discussions with the foreign ministers of Kuwait and Singapore, both of which also focused on the developments in West Asia.<\/p>\n
Following his conversation with Kuwait\u2019s Foreign Minister, Jaishankar remarked on the productive dialogue, emphasizing the regional situation and the welfare of the Indian community in Kuwait.<\/p>\n
Kuwait\u2019s foreign ministry confirmed that the leaders\u2019 exchange revolved around recent regional developments and the efforts being made in response.<\/p>\n
After speaking with Singapore\u2019s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Jaishankar noted the pleasure of discussing the conflict in West Asia and its broader implications.<\/p>\n
