Authorities have concluded their initial inquiry into an incident involving an alleged racially motivated assault. The individual accused has refuted the claims, asserting that he was assaulted while seeking assistance following a break-in at his residence.<\/p>\n
Victoria Police have finalized their preliminary investigation into a reported Islamophobic attack, during which a man purportedly issued death threats to members of the community. They are currently deliberating on potential charges.<\/p>\n
On March 8, an uninvited individual entered a community dinner in Ballarat, where he reportedly began to physically assault guests, intimidate children, and shout racially charged threats, including phrases like “f*** Allah” and “go back to the s***hole where you come from.”<\/p>\n
Acting Superintendent Jason Templar from Ballarat Police stated that if adequate evidence is available, charges could be brought against the man under hate speech legislation. “The evidence is presently with our legal services division for evaluation to determine the most suitable charges,” he remarked.<\/p>\n
The accused, a 37-year-old man from Ballarat, has denied any misconduct, claiming that he was attacked after entering the community hall to seek help due to a break-in at his home. “I woke up to people trying to break into my house,” he explained. “I chased after them and lost them near the community center, then I went inside.” He attributed his lack of clothing to having been asleep when the break-in occurred and stated that he did not report the incident to the police.<\/p>\n
“I just opened the door to the community center at an unfortunate time \u2014 they perceived me as a threat,” he said, describing his treatment by attendees. “They restrained me, and my elbow has not fully healed since.” He also rejected the claims of having made any racist remarks, insisting that he would have faced charges if he had done so. “If I had said anything of that nature, I would have been taken into custody,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Regarding his condition during the incident, he affirmed that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He noted that the police spoke to him on the night of the event and escorted him home, suggesting that they believed he had a difficult evening. “The officers just had a chat with me and said it seemed like I had a rough night,” he said.<\/p>\n
After seeing ABC’s coverage of the incident, he voluntarily approached the police. “I went to the police station, and they didn\u2019t really say anything to me; they just let me leave,” he recounted, adding that no formal interview or statement was taken from him. “I haven’t heard from anyone at Victoria Police since that night,” he mentioned.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Victoria Police stated that they have maintained communication with the individual removed from the dinner since the incident. However, several attendees of the dinner have contested the man’s account. One witness claimed to have attempted to guide the man away from the venue to prevent a confrontation but alleged that he was then assaulted. Another witness noted smelling alcohol on the accused, while eight different witnesses reported that he made racist comments and threats during the incident.<\/p>\n
