A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following an incident involving a Molotov cocktail thrown at the residence of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Authorities in San Francisco report that Daniel Moreno-Gama allegedly ignited a fire at Altman’s home around 4 a.m. on Friday before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n
Shortly thereafter, Moreno-Gama is accused of traveling to OpenAI’s headquarters, approximately 4.8 kilometers away, where he allegedly threatened to set the building ablaze. The individual reportedly harbors strong anti-artificial intelligence sentiments, as indicated by a document found in his possession that discussed the dangers of AI and the notion of “impending extinction,” according to a federal criminal complaint.<\/p>\n
During a press conference, Matt Cobo, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Francisco division, emphasized the premeditated nature of the incidents, stating, “This was planned, targeted and extremely serious.” Fortunately, no injuries occurred at either the Altman residence or OpenAI’s offices.<\/p>\n
Moreno-Gama faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder and attempted arson, as outlined by San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. She alleged that he intended to harm both Altman and a security guard present at the residence. He is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday, but it is unclear whether he has legal representation.<\/p>\n
Jenkins noted that the state charges could result in a prison sentence ranging from 19 years to life. In addition to state charges, federal prosecutors have also filed charges against Moreno-Gama for possession of an unregistered firearm and destruction of property using explosives, which carry potential penalties of up to 10 and 20 years, respectively.<\/p>\n
FBI agents visited Moreno-Gama’s home in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston, shortly after the incident, where they conducted an extensive search. Court documents reveal that when arrested, Moreno-Gama possessed a document that outlined his anti-AI views and included threats directed at Altman. He allegedly stated that if he intended to encourage others to commit violence, he must demonstrate his sincerity by taking action himself.<\/p>\n
Surveillance footage presented in the complaint captures an individual, believed to be Moreno-Gama, approaching Altman’s driveway and throwing the Molotov cocktail, which ignited at the top of a metal gate. Additional video from OpenAI\u2019s headquarters reportedly shows him using a chair to damage glass doors. Security personnel at the site reported that Moreno-Gama expressed intentions to “burn it down and kill anyone inside.”<\/p>\n
Upon his arrest, law enforcement officials recovered incendiary devices, kerosene, a lighter, and the aforementioned document from Moreno-Gama. He is currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail on state charges.<\/p>\n
U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian stated that this incident will be treated as an act of domestic terrorism, asserting that authorities will pursue a rigorous prosecution.
