Residents of Southport are left uncertain about whether the officials responsible for the “catastrophic” failures leading up to the murder of three girls are still making the same errors, according to a former victims’ commissioner.<\/p>\n
Vera Baird KC emphasized the need for those who neglected to adequately supervise the perpetrator, Axel Rudakubana, to be held “personally accountable” and insisted that authorities should not merely respond with apologies.<\/p>\n
“It’s high time for personal accountability,” she stated. “We frequently see tragic failures followed by public inquiries, yet no one seems to be compelled to rectify their poor practices. I don\u2019t understand why this should be tolerated.”<\/p>\n
The public inquiry into the tragic incident concluded on Monday, revealing that the UK’s multi-agency approach had “utterly failed” to prevent the murders of six-year-old Bebe King, nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, and seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, along with the stabbing of ten others at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in July 2024.<\/p>\n
Inquiry chair Adrian Fulford criticized what he described as a “disheartening merry-go-round” of governmental bodies shirking responsibility and a “frankly depressing” unwillingness to accept accountability. “This culture must come to an end,” he asserted.<\/p>\n
Baird, who has served as an MP and barrister, remarked, “It is crucial to determine precisely who failed to fulfill their responsibilities and to impose disciplinary measures.” She added, “If we do not hold individuals accountable for their mistakes, it renders the process meaningless. Residents of Southport cannot be assured that those who erred will not repeat their mistakes today.”<\/p>\n
The attorney representing the families of the three girls expressed their outrage at the systemic failures and indicated a readiness to identify those responsible if the families felt that appropriate actions were not taken. Chris Walker of the law firm Bond Turner stated, “There are five specific state entities that are of great concern to us, and we find their actions to be completely unacceptable.”<\/p>\n
He identified these entities as the counter-terrorism agency Prevent, Lancashire police, Lancashire social services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, and Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Prevent had reportedly declined to escalate concerns about Rudakubana on three occasions, citing the absence of a coherent ideology such as jihadism or right-wing extremism.<\/p>\n
Baird commented, “If Prevent identifies someone who is evidently dangerous, they cannot simply say, ‘It’s not our responsibility\u2014let’s pass the issue along.’ It is vital for individuals to accept accountability.”<\/p>\n
In her capacity as chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which oversees miscarriages of justice, Baird also voiced concerns regarding young men being drawn into violent misogyny through online platforms.<\/p>\n
Labour MP Patrick Hurley, representing Southport, stated that the inquiry’s findings have amplified calls for a ban on social media for those under 16 to curb the risk of online radicalization. “This would eliminate the path to self-radicalization, enhance children’s mental health, and prevent these individuals from connecting with others who share their extremist views,” he argued.<\/p>\n
Hurley urged the government to allocate additional funding to the agencies that faltered, to “bring them up to standard.” He asserted that certain frontline officials need to be reprimanded for their mistakes, referencing a consultant at Alder Hey who overlooked critical details regarding the suspect’s violent tendencies. “Such oversights cannot be permitted to happen again,” he stressed.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told the Commons that new legislation aimed at addressing threats posed by individuals planning attacks without a defined ideology would be introduced in response to the Southport incident. She highlighted a broader concern regarding “boys whose thinking has been distorted by excessive isolation online,” as identified by the inquiry.<\/p>\n
