With this victory, Carney\u2019s Liberal Party now holds 174 out of 343 seats in the House of Commons, enabling them to legislate without relying on opposition support.<\/p>\n
This development reinforces Carney’s leadership position in Canada, ensuring he remains in power until at least 2029.<\/p>\n
The Liberals have achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Canadian government to transition from minority to majority status between national elections after winning all three contested by-election seats.<\/p>\n
In a statement on social media, Carney expressed gratitude for the electorate’s trust in his government’s agenda, stating, “We accept that support with humility, determination, and a clear understanding of what this moment demands.”<\/p>\n
The Liberal Party characterized this achievement as a pivotal moment for the nation, highlighting the necessity for strong leadership and a robust economic strategy while encouraging leaders from diverse backgrounds to work towards a better future.<\/p>\n
Previously, the Liberals had depended on selective backing from the Conservative Party to pass economic and trade-related legislation over the past year.<\/p>\n
Andrew McDougall, an assistant professor of Canadian politics at the University of Toronto, remarked, “He will now have the ability to pass legislation without needing to negotiate with opposition parties for votes.”<\/p>\n
In response, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre voiced his discontent on the social media platform X, criticizing both the process and the outcome. He claimed that the Carney Liberals did not secure a majority through a general election or the recent by-elections, but rather through backroom arrangements with politicians who had betrayed their constituents.<\/p>\n
Poilievre further asserted that while Carney was engaged in what he termed a “cynical power grab,” the Prime Minister had significantly increased the national deficit and contributed to soaring grocery prices and housing costs, making Canada the worst in the G7 in these areas.<\/p>\n
This outcome cements Carney’s authority in Canadian politics, with the next national elections scheduled for 2029.<\/p>\n
Prior to this, the last federal government to enjoy a majority in Parliament was Justin Trudeau’s administration from 2015 to 2019.<\/p>\n
Carney, who previously served as the Governor of the Bank of England, ascended to the role of Prime Minister last year amid public dissatisfaction with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive posturing. He also committed to reducing Canada\u2019s dependence on the United States.<\/p>\n
Nelson Wiseman, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, noted that Trump’s influence was significant in Carney\u2019s rise to power, and Carney’s international engagements have further elevated his standing among Canadians. Wiseman remarked, “Canadians appreciated his reception at Davos and were impressed by his travels to 13 countries by last September, seeking new alliances and trade agreements.
