A coalition of Labour MPs is preparing to introduce a range of innovative strategies aimed at countering rightwing populism. These proposals include establishing a Swiss-style agreement with the European Union, reducing electricity costs, reinforcing climate initiatives, and lessening reliance on the United States.<\/p>\n
Among the contributors to a forthcoming compilation of essays is Anneliese Dodds, a former cabinet minister, who advocates for a thorough reassessment of the UK’s relationship with the US. She emphasizes that alliances should stem from a pragmatic evaluation of shared values and objectives among nations.<\/p>\n
Andrew Lewin, the Labour MP representing Welwyn Hatfield and a proponent of the EU\u2019s youth mobility agreement, has articulated in his essay the necessity for the UK to cultivate stronger economic connections with the EU, which would include enhanced freedom of movement.<\/p>\n
This pamphlet, entitled “Common Endeavour,” is poised for release by eight of the party’s most forward-thinking MPs as they aim to rejuvenate the government\u2019s currently dismal standing, with Keir Starmer’s Labour trailing behind Reform, the Conservatives, and the Greens in the latest YouGov polling.<\/p>\n
The MPs, who have addressed various issues including climate change, living costs, and international relations, have been organizing brainstorming sessions in Parliament termed “Labour Thinks” to reshape the party’s agenda.<\/p>\n
Jeevun Sandher, the MP for Loughborough and the organizer of the initial group, has contributed an essay on economic matters. He noted a collective desire among MPs to provide a more substantial intellectual input into the party’s future direction. \u201cWe cannot shy away from the reality. We are facing a multitude of crises, from economic challenges to internal discord fueled by technology, alongside external threats from global conflicts,\u201d he remarked, stressing the urgency for the party to respond decisively.<\/p>\n
Lewin emphasized the importance of articulating a more ambitious vision for a closer relationship with the EU, including advocating for freedom of movement coupled with a Swiss-style emergency brake. \u201cAs a party, we must have the confidence to engage in this dialogue, especially given the significant shift in circumstances over the past two years, particularly with migration figures nearing net zero this year,\u201d he stated. He added that this situation could impact economic growth, suggesting that increased mobility for young professionals from the EU could be beneficial.<\/p>\n
Several contributors to the essay collection hold significant roles within the government. Sandher serves as the parliamentary private secretary to the Department of Business and Trade, while Luke Murphy, Anna Gelderd, and Liam Byrne hold similar positions in the Departments of Transport, Energy Security and Net Zero, and the business and trade select committee, respectively. Additionally, Calvin Bailey and Alex Baker, members of the defence select committee, have also contributed to the pamphlet’s security essay.<\/p>\n
In his piece, Byrne contends that Labour should not view Reform as merely a protest movement but rather as a manifestation of rightwing populism that has been \u201cimported\u201d from the United States, asserting that it is essential to campaign against this phenomenon as an external threat to British social unity.<\/p>\n
Sandher highlighted that the unaffordability of basic necessities has been driving voters’ dissatisfaction, particularly among those in low-wage non-graduate positions. He suggested that the government should significantly expand job opportunities in green industries and construction, areas that cannot be outsourced, and implement more universal measures to alleviate living costs for middle-income families, such as recent reductions in energy bills through the removal of certain green levies.<\/p>\n
Murphy, focusing on climate issues, called for the government to explore more efficient methods to cut energy costs by reallocating levies from bills and swiftly moving away from a pricing system that relies on fossil gas. He also urged the government to adopt a stronger stance in advocating for climate action, highlighting the need to recognize public support for these initiatives.<\/p>\n
Geldard\u2019s essay, which addresses artificial intelligence and data, proposes that the UK should establish its own sovereign fund utilizing the extensive data it possesses, rather than selling it piecemeal to corporations. She advocates for the development of an AI model that would be under national control, utilizing domestic infrastructure and data, governed by democratic oversight, stating, \u201cThis model doesn\u2019t need to compete with the largest American or Chinese systems but should excel in areas crucial for national governance.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pamphlet, published by the Fabians, adopts the title “Common Endeavour” to reflect the language of Clause Four of Labour’s rulebook, which underwent a controversial revision under Tony Blair during the 1995 party conference.<\/p>\n
However, some may perceive the group\u2019s efforts as a counterpoint to the ambitious Conservative MPs who authored “Britannia Unchained” in 2010, which called for a more assertive government approach under David Cameron’s leadership.<\/p>\n
Both Lewin and Sandher expressed hope that the essays could aid the party in articulating a more constructive narrative. \u201cThe world in April 2026 will differ significantly from that of July 2024, a fact no one can dispute. The recent months have accelerated change,\u201d Lewin noted.
