In the wake of the suspension of 28 police officers and staff from a police station due to alleged investigative shortcomings in the case of an 18-year-old girl who went missing and was discovered deceased eight months later, both the Jharkhand Police Association (JPA) and the victim\u2019s family have called for the removal of the Bokaro Superintendent of Police.<\/p>\n
Rahul Kumar Murmu, president of the JPA, described the mass suspension as \u201cunfortunate\u201d and accused the Superintendent of Police of trying to evade accountability. He asserted that the SP had neglected the case review and failed to take necessary actions, which contributed to significant investigative failures. “To obscure his own shortcomings, 28 personnel from a single police station have been suspended,” he stated.<\/p>\n
The association indicated that it would engage with governmental and relevant authorities, expressing a readiness to pursue all avenues to ensure justice for its members. They also demanded the reinstatement of the “innocent” personnel who were suspended and called for greater transparency regarding transfers and appointments within the police force. “Lower-ranking officers are routinely made scapegoats. Isn’t it true that higher officials share responsibility for the case?” Murmu questioned.<\/p>\n
Supporting the association’s stance, the victim’s mother, Rekha Devi, called for the dismissal of senior police officials. She insisted that all officers involved in the investigation, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and other investigative staff, should be held accountable. \u201cMy daughter\u2019s death is not the fault of one individual; it reflects a systemic failure across all levels. Everyone responsible needs to face consequences,\u201d she asserted.<\/p>\n
This development follows the discovery of the remains of the 18-year-old girl, who had been missing since July of the previous year. The case has attracted significant attention from the Jharkhand High Court, which has criticized the police for inaction and the harassment of the victim’s family.<\/p>\n
Subsequent to the recovery of the remains, Bokaro police suspended 28 personnel, including the officer-in-charge of the local station, over allegations of negligence, attempts to protect the accused, and suspected corrupt practices. In response, 14 new personnel have been assigned to the police station to replace those suspended, and a new officer-in-charge, along with sub-inspectors and constables, has been appointed.<\/p>\n
The case is set to be reviewed again on April 15 at the Jharkhand High Court.<\/p>\n
