The ongoing power conflict between the Sudanese military and parliamentary factions has intensified, resulting in a civil war. This turmoil, which commenced on April 15, 2023, is primarily between two military leaders: General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n
As the civil war continues into its third year, the plight of newborns in Sudan remains dire. Reportedly, three infants are born every minute in the midst of this violence, as highlighted by ReliefWeb, an initiative under the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).<\/p>\n
According to ReliefWeb, the ongoing conflict has resulted in an average of three children being born into the war every minute since the fighting erupted three years ago. Projections indicate that between April 2023 and April 2026, approximately 5.6 million infants will be born in the nation, averaging over 5,000 births daily, or roughly three births each minute.<\/p>\n
Another alarming issue raised by ReliefWeb is the increasing maternal mortality rate in Sudan, which has surged by more than 11 percent. Data from Sudan’s Health Ministry revealed that in 2025, the country recorded one of the highest maternal mortality rates worldwide, with 295 deaths per 100,000 live births.<\/p>\n
The United Nations estimated the infant mortality rate in Sudan to be 42.9 in 2024. Since the onset of the conflict in April 2023, it is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of health facilities in Sudan have ceased operations. Many hospitals are grappling with critical shortages of medical supplies, medications, staff, and fuel necessary for generators.<\/p>\n
Following the closure of the Chad-Sudan border in March 2026, the Darfur region has experienced acute shortages of vital medicines, nutritional supplies, and medical equipment.<\/p>\n
Mohamed Abdiladif, the Director of Save the Children Sudan, an international non-governmental organization, remarked, \u201cEvery single minute of this conflict, three babies are born into conditions no child should ever face. These children are born in overcrowded shelters, under-equipped or damaged health facilities, or while their families are on the move.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abdiladif added that assaults on hospitals and civilian areas, which are supposed to be safeguarded under international humanitarian law, have hindered access to crucial care for mothers and their newborns.<\/p>\n
He urged all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians and facilitate humanitarian access. \u201cAll parties must ensure the safety of civilians and allow necessary access for urgent assistance to reach families in need,\u201d he stated. \u201cHumanitarian access must be granted and supported to avert further loss of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since attaining independence in 1956, Sudan has experienced a cycle of coups and military governance, alongside two civil wars, and continues to bear the consequences of the Darfur genocide.<\/p>\n
In October 2021, following the ousting of a joint military-civilian government, a coup led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, shifted Sudan\u2019s political landscape. Rising tensions between the two leaders regarding the transition to civilian governance ultimately led to the current civil war.<\/p>\n
As reported by the BBC, proposals were made to integrate 100,000 RSF fighters into the national army, with subsequent discussions on leadership of the unified force. However, both generals have shown a reluctance to relinquish their power.<\/p>\n
Clashes erupted between the rival factions on April 15, 2023. The RSF repositioned its forces across the nation, posing a challenge to the army. Initially, the RSF seized control of Khartoum, but the army managed to reclaim the capital in March 2025.<\/p>\n
