The gradual realization that followed the birth of my son three months ago was one that no book could have adequately prepared me for. In the midst of sleepless nights and constant feedings, I came to understand that my entire life had shifted while I was too fatigued to fully grasp it.<\/p>\n
For nearly ten years, I have been shaping my identity as a psychologist specializing in men’s health and conducting research in this field. I had a solid understanding of who I was by the time my son, Arty, was born. However, I was unprepared for the emergence of a new identity that came along with fatherhood, which needed to be integrated into a life that was already complete. This new role came without a mentor or a support network of peers to guide me, leaving me to navigate it on my own.<\/p>\n
Developing this new aspect of my identity proved challenging, as my only references were cautionary lists detailing what not to become. I learned that I should avoid being emotionally distant, merely a weekend dad, or a primary breadwinner who views fatherhood as a secondary concern. It became increasingly evident that many new fathers lack a comprehensive guide to manage the conflicting demands of traditional fatherhood models alongside contemporary expectations.<\/p>\n
A recent report from the Movember Institute of Men\u2019s Health addresses this issue. Among the 1,216 fathers surveyed, two out of five expressed a desire to parent differently than how they were raised, with over 75% prioritizing being a good father over career achievements.<\/p>\n
The aspiration to redefine fatherhood is clear, yet the necessary support structures are lacking. From the moment my wife announced her pregnancy, she received extensive, detailed advice on what to anticipate and prepare for week by week. In contrast, I mostly encountered well-intentioned but vague warnings, such as, \u201cThings are about to change; be ready.\u201d While many of us can recognize what good fatherhood looks like\u2014whether from personal experiences or portrayals in books and television\u2014actualizing it is a different endeavor.<\/p>\n
For decades, mothers have been navigating the complexities of balancing their professional and parenting roles. It is vital to keep this dialogue active in our workplaces and advocacy efforts aimed at achieving gender equality, especially since women still bear a disproportionate share of caregiving responsibilities. However, discussions often overlook the family as a system of interconnected individuals. One effective way to enhance outcomes for mothers is to enable fathers to actively participate as equal caregivers\u2014capable of managing nighttime duties, cooking, and the mental load. When I am seen pushing a stroller or changing a diaper in public, the surprise onlookers\u2019 faces indicates that the expectations for fathers are not only low but, in many cases, nonexistent.<\/p>\n
Over the past three months, I have learned that integrating a new identity, much like fostering a successful marriage, demands compromise. Some aspects will be lost while others are gained. Amid the economic uncertainties faced by many young families today, simply pressuring new fathers to do more without providing structural support for this significant transition is not a viable solution. When asked whether Australian society adequately celebrates and supports involved fathers, 54% of respondents answered \u201cno\u201d or \u201cunsure.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is unrealistic to expect future generations of fathers to absorb a new model of fatherhood passively while the surrounding systems remain unchanged. This is particularly true for many men, including myself, who do not have their own fathers to consult. The existing support structures, from healthcare services to workplaces and community programs, were not designed with fathers in mind. Men are present in these spaces; what is needed is the commitment to adapt these systems to serve them effectively.<\/p>\n
Among the Australian fathers surveyed, 60% reported that no health professional inquired about their mental health during pregnancy or in the year following their child\u2019s birth. After ensuring that mothers and babies receive care, a few moments spent checking in on fathers\u2019 well-being could be invaluable for the entire family. The government currently funds coordinated support groups for mothers, which serve as critical resources. Fathers would similarly benefit from such investments. While my wife has received numerous invitations to events and social gatherings during this journey, my experience has been markedly quieter.<\/p>\n
We are witnessing a generation of Australian fathers eager to approach parenting differently\u2014over 72% indicated they are more involved in their children\u2019s daily activities than their own fathers were, and 77% feel that fatherhood has encouraged them to express love and vulnerability more openly. The inclination is positive. What these fathers require now is not additional pressure to engage but rather systems, check-ins, community support, and candid conversations to help them find their footing.<\/p>\n
