NFL journalist Dianna Russini has stepped down from her position at The Athletic, just days after images of her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel led to an internal review at the sports publication owned by The New York Times.<\/p>\n
Last week, the New York Post published photographs of Russini and Vrabel taken at a resort in Arizona, prior to the NFL owners’ meetings that commenced in Phoenix on March 29.<\/p>\n
In a letter addressed to Steven Ginsberg, the executive editor of The Athletic, Russini stated, “Throughout my career, I have reported on the NFL with integrity and commitment, and I stand by every article I have written. The Athletic initially provided me with unwavering support and confidence in my work when the Page Six article surfaced, for which I am thankful. However, in the aftermath, various media commentators have engaged in rampant speculation that is disconnected from reality.”<\/p>\n
She continued, “This media storm is advancing without consideration for the review process that The Athletic is attempting to conclude. It is escalating due to ongoing leaks, and I have no desire to participate in a public inquiry that has already caused more harm than I am willing to endure. Consequently, I have chosen to resign now, prior to the expiration of my contract on June 30. My decision is not an acceptance of the narrative surrounding this incident, but rather a refusal to perpetuate it or let it overshadow my career.”<\/p>\n
Vrabel was absent from the Patriots’ pre-draft press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n
In an internal communication to The Athletic’s staff, Ginsberg emphasized that the leadership had taken the situation seriously from the outset. Initially, The Athletic defended Russini, noting that the photos lacked context and showed public interactions among several individuals. However, the review was broadened after further reporting raised questions about Russini’s coverage of Vrabel and the nature of their relationship.<\/p>\n
“When we first learned about this situation last week, there were evident concerns, but we received a thorough explanation, and our instinct was to support and defend a colleague while we continued our review,” Ginsberg remarked in his memo. “As new information came to light, additional questions emerged that became part of our investigation. While our inquiry into Dianna’s conduct was still ongoing, she opted to resign.”<\/p>\n
Ginsberg confirmed that The Athletic would pursue a standards review of Russini’s work.<\/p>\n
Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 after spending nearly ten years at ESPN, where she held various positions, including SportsCenter anchor, NFL analyst, and insider. She also hosted a podcast for The Athletic and appeared on their video platform.<\/p>\n
The images published by Page Six depict Russini and Vrabel together at a luxurious Sedona hotel, including moments by a pool, in a hot tub, and on a rooftop deck. Some of the images seemingly show the two in close proximity, holding hands and embracing. Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married to other individuals, have asserted that their interaction was platonic and taken out of context. Russini mentioned that the photos did not accurately reflect their participation in a larger group gathering, while Vrabel dismissed any implications of wrongdoing as “laughable.”<\/p>\n
Vrabel, who has won three Super Bowls as a player with the Patriots, is preparing for his second season as the team’s coach. He was named AP NFL Coach of the Year after guiding the Patriots to a 14-3 record last season, which culminated in a Super Bowl defeat against Seattle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
