Rishabh Pant’s tenure as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants has had a challenging start, continuing into the current season. So far in IPL 2026, Pant has played five innings for LSG, amassing only 104 runs with a strike rate of 122.35. This performance is considered underwhelming, particularly in a season where five of the top ten run scorers boast strike rates exceeding 170.
The struggles extend beyond Pant, as several key players in LSG’s lineup, including Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran, have also failed to perform at their expected levels. Former Indian cricketer and commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu commented on Pant’s situation, suggesting that he is often responsible for his own dismissals rather than being outplayed by bowlers.
“It seems Rishabh is getting himself out more than the bowlers are dismissing him. He possesses the skill and capability to improve if he allows himself the necessary time to adjust. Currently, both their batting and bowling departments appear to be facing difficulties,” Sidhu remarked during a discussion on Star Sports.
Sidhu emphasized that the LSG batsmen need to engage in some introspection to overcome their current issues. “There is significant soul-searching required. Their struggles have been ongoing, particularly with the top order underperforming. They have relied heavily on their top three, yet the expected returns have not materialized. With players like Markram, Pooran, Marsh, and Rishabh Pant, there is considerable potential, but the necessary partnerships are lacking. Even a 50-run partnership at the top has become a rarity,” he noted. As a result of their star players’ poor performances, LSG finds itself in a precarious position, having won two out of five matches and currently sitting seventh among ten teams.
