Iraola Set to Depart Bournemouth After Season, Alerting Premier League Competitors

Andoni Iraola has officially notified Bournemouth of his intention to depart when his contract concludes at the end of the current season. He is anticipated to evaluate various opportunities this summer, with multiple Premier League positions likely becoming available.

The 43-year-old’s exit could pave the way for him to return to his childhood club, Athletic Bilbao. However, Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager, is reportedly the leading candidate to take over from Ernesto Valverde.

Discussions regarding Iraola’s future have been ongoing for several months. He chose to keep his coaching staff uninformed before announcing his decision to leave Bournemouth after three years at the helm. The team’s players were made aware of his planned departure following training on Tuesday.

Iraola has maintained consistent communication with Bournemouth’s director of football, Tiago Pinto, and technical director, Simon Francis, while refraining from making a commitment during 15 months of negotiations.

Having joined Bournemouth in June 2023, Iraola released a statement through the club on Tuesday, expressing, “I believe this is the right time for me to step back, but I will always cherish wonderful memories of this club.”

Bill Foley, the club’s owner and chairman, remarked, “Andoni has played a crucial role in steering this club’s direction. He infused intensity, innovation, and a distinct philosophy that enhanced AFC Bournemouth both on and off the field. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and will always treasure our time together.”

Following a recent victory over Arsenal, Bournemouth is eager to achieve their highest league finish and had hoped to retain Iraola, believing they could continue to progress under his management next season. However, as time went on, it became clear to all parties that a resolution was necessary before the season concluded, prompting Bournemouth to accelerate their search for a new head coach. Marco Rose, formerly of RB Leipzig and Dortmund, along with Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, are reportedly among those being considered.

Iraola has built a reputation as one of the league’s most respected managers, leading Bournemouth to a record points total last season and matching the ninth-place finish that Eddie Howe achieved in 2016-17. Last summer, he successfully navigated the departures of key players such as Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez, Dango Ouattara, and, mid-season, Antoine Semenyo, generating over £250 million in transfer fees.

Having made 510 appearances for Athletic, who have recently intensified their search for Valverde’s successor, Iraola has acknowledged his status as a “supporter” of the La Liga side. Nonetheless, he has suggested a preference to preserve his legacy there following a 12-year playing career.

Crystal Palace has shown interest in Iraola after Oliver Glasner confirmed his exit from Selhurst Park at the season’s end in January, but it is expected that he will attract interest from larger clubs.

Towards the conclusion of the last season, Iraola hinted in an interview with the Guardian that this season might be his final one at Bournemouth. “At times, after a few seasons, you sense that the message may not resonate with the players as before,” he noted. “Typically, managers are attuned to these nuances and make decisions based on the prevailing circumstances.”

Bournemouth’s upcoming match is against Howe and Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday, where Howe has yet to secure a victory against his former club as the manager of Newcastle.
