The highly publicized Coachella festival has successfully concluded its first of two weekends featuring a diverse lineup of live performances in the California desert.
This year’s festival prominently showcased major pop acts, including Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Colombian sensation Karol G. However, the event also included a variety of unexpected performances that added to its excitement.
For the first time, seven stages were available for online streaming, reinforcing Coachella’s appeal to both attendees on-site and those watching from home.
Here are some notable moments and discussions from an exhilarating three days of music.
During her previous appearance at Coachella, Sabrina Carpenter assured fans she would return as a headliner. Two years later, she fulfilled that promise, demonstrating her rightful place at the top of the lineup.
After an intriguing opening film featuring Sam Elliott, Carpenter appeared from a vintage car on one of her two stages, performing tracks from her albums “Man’s Best Friend” and “Short n’ Sweet.” Her catchy, upbeat songs are both infectious and radiate positivity.
Despite the impressive budget allocated for her performance and costumes, Carpenter’s natural charisma shone through, as she moved energetically across the stage with skillful choreography. One highlight included an unexpected cameo by Susan Sarandon, who delivered a poignant monologue that contrasted sharply with the overall joyful atmosphere of Carpenter’s set.
While Will Ferrell’s appearance didn’t carry the same weight, his comedic presence added a lighthearted touch to the performance. A pre-recorded message from Samuel L. Jackson felt like a playful display of Carpenter’s confidence and flair.
She ended her set in an extravagant manner, returning to the classic car, which was elevated high as water poured from its trunk, providing a whimsical conclusion to an undeniably impressive performance.
Justin Bieber elicited mixed responses during his first official performance at Coachella. Fans eagerly anticipated how the Canadian pop icon would approach his set, and he chose to break away from the extravagant norms set by previous headliners.
In stark contrast to the grand performances by artists like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, Bieber opted for a minimalist approach. Apart from a few guest appearances, including The Kid LAROI and Afrobeats stars Tems and Wizkid, he predominantly performed solo on a simple, sunken stage.
At one point, he sat on a stool, interacting with the audience by screening YouTube clips and singing along to classic hits such as “With You,” “Sorry,” and “Where Are Ü Now.” He even shared amusing concert mishaps and viral moments from his career.
Some critics have expressed disappointment, suggesting that Bieber’s reported $10 million fee could have been better utilized for a more elaborate show. While some deemed his performance as lazy, others appreciated the unique and personal approach he took.
Bieber’s performance was more of a reflective journey through his career rather than a traditional spectacle. Those who are familiar with his redemption story may have found deeper meaning in his presentation, which concluded with memorable moments from his surprise albums released last year.
Coachella consistently features a range of surprise guests, and this year was no exception. The festival’s lineup could have easily included another entire event based on the notable appearances made over the weekend.
Headliners Carpenter and Bieber weren’t the only ones harnessing their star power to attract prominent guests. Fans were disappointed to see UK artist PinkPantheress perform without her Swedish collaborator Zara Larsson, but she still delivered an engaging set alongside actor Tyriq Withers and rising producers Horsegiirl and The Dare, as well as bassist Thundercat.
Thundercat also reunited with his former band Suicidal Tendencies on the festival’s closing day, while Horsegiirl joined Wet Leg for a lively performance. Teddy Swims honored Vanessa Carlton during his main stage set, which featured Joe Jonas, while David Lee Roth performed Van Halen’s “Jump.”
Jennifer Lopez was a standout addition to David Guetta’s set on Saturday night, and Kehlani performed “Folded” alongside Giveon. Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance with Hugel for a rendition of “The Next Episode.”
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan graced Coachella for the first time as a guest of Sombr, who performed the classic 1995 track “1979.” Khalid joined Disclosure for a performance of his hit “Talk,” while Lizzo made guest appearances at KAYTRANADA and Sexyy Red’s sets. Additionally, hip-hop legends Clipse brought out Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, and M.I.A. and Diplo seemed to have reconciled, reuniting for a performance of “Paper Planes” during Major Lazer’s main stage set.
