Taking the new ball at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the left-arm pacer achieved a notable milestone by claiming his 100th wicket, striking first by dismissing MI opener Ryan Rickelton, who was caught at square leg. Arshdeep’s delivery, which swung back into the left-handed batsman, set the stage for a surprise first-ball wicket of India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav, as a well-placed outswinger found the edge, landing in the hands of a fielder at short third. Ultimately, Arshdeep concluded his spell with impressive figures of three wickets for 22 runs in four overs.
Prior to this match, Arshdeep had gone without a wicket for four consecutive games, starting with the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand last month. He had taken two wickets in the previous game but conceded 50 runs. After rediscovering his rhythm with effective movement and precise yorkers in Mumbai, Arshdeep shared that his passion for creating Instagram reels, combined with a constructive conversation with head coach Ricky Ponting, contributed to his resurgence.
During the post-match interview, Arshdeep expressed his appreciation for the support he receives through social media, stating, “I enjoy the backing and a lot of credit goes to my social media presence. I love creating reels and sharing them, and many fans recognize me for that. I’ll continue to produce content for them.”
The two-time T20 World Cup champion acknowledged that he had confided in Ponting about his struggles with form since the recent title victory in March. “It feels rewarding, and it stems from a discussion I had with Ricky after one training session. I admitted that I wasn’t feeling up to par and that the ball wasn’t coming off my hand the way it should. We had a motivating chat,” Arshdeep recounted. “He helped me understand how to keep my mental state fresh, emphasizing that I was putting too much pressure on myself and should allow things to unfold naturally.”
He added, “I mentioned that I didn’t feel right when releasing the ball. Our conversation wasn’t technical; he pointed out that I was holding myself to unrealistic standards following the World Cup victory and reminded me that it’s impossible to maintain that level constantly.” Arshdeep highlighted that regaining his rhythm for early wickets involved both mental and technical adjustments, a perspective that resonated well, especially coming from someone with Ponting’s extensive experience in winning World Cups.
Currently, the Punjab Kings are in a strong position at the top of the league table, remaining the only unbeaten team in the IPL 2026 season, with four wins and one match affected by rain across five games.
