Mikel Arteta is determined to secure a victory in the upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday, emphasizing that he has never considered playing for a draw.
Currently, Arsenal holds a six-point advantage over City, having played one additional match. A draw could significantly enhance their chances of clinching the coveted title, with statistics from Opta suggesting an 89% likelihood of Arsenal winning the championship if the game ends in a tie at the Etihad Stadium.
In recent weeks, Arsenal has faced challenges in their attacking play, beginning with a 2-0 defeat to City in the Carabao Cup final on March 22. Their season has, however, been characterized by strong defensive performances. On Wednesday, they successfully advanced to the Champions League semi-finals after a 0-0 draw against Sporting, securing a 1-0 aggregate win. This situation has led to speculation that Arteta might prioritize a defensive strategy against City, yet his ambitions remain higher.
Pep Guardiola reiterated on Friday that a loss would effectively end their title hopes. Arteta is keen to challenge this notion, firmly stating his intention to seek a win rather than settle for a point. “No,” he responded when asked about accepting a draw. “We are aiming to win. We are focused on winning the game, and we haven’t discussed the possibility of a draw. Our preparations are solely aimed at achieving victory.” He also noted that their approach will not differ from past matches over the last five years.
In a previous encounter at the Etihad Stadium in 2024, Arsenal faced criticism for their defensive tactics in a 0-0 draw. At that time, with nine games remaining, it seemed a satisfactory result as they maintained a slight lead over City, although they trailed Liverpool. Arsenal ultimately won eight of their last nine matches, with one loss to Aston Villa, but City won all their remaining games to claim the title.
Rodri, the City midfielder, later criticized Arsenal’s mentality during that match, stating, “The difference was in the head. When they played us at the Etihad, it seemed they were content with a draw rather than going for the win.” Arteta reflected on that experience, noting that it’s crucial to capitalize on points earned in such matches in subsequent games. “It’s essential to approach the game in the best possible manner to secure a win,” he stated, acknowledging that sometimes opponents can force a team into a more defensive stance.
Arsenal has struggled offensively, managing only three goals in their last five games as the season’s physical and mental toll has become apparent. Declan Rice mentioned the need for the team to improve on basic skills, particularly short passing, and called for enhanced composure. “It’s part of football,” Arteta acknowledged. “It’s a moment in the season, especially when certain players are unavailable, affecting team cohesion. We need to take responsibility and improve.”
Arteta confirmed that Bukayo Saka remains sidelined due to an Achilles issue and was uncertain about the return of Jurriën Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Martin Ødegaard from their injuries. However, he suggested that Noni Madueke should be fit after exiting the match against Sporting with an injury.
