Indrans, a National Award winner at 68, overcame financial barriers to return to education, taking Class 7 exams after leaving school post-Class 4 due to uniform costs.

Malayalam cinema is widely recognized for its remarkable character actors, and this aspect of the industry is highly valued. Since its inception, one of the defining characteristics of this cinematic tradition has been the ability of creators to craft intricate and meaningful roles not only for leading actors but also for supporting ones, who often exhibit equal, if not greater, talent. Indrans stands out as a prime example of this, showcasing his versatility by taking on a diverse array of roles across various genres, establishing himself as a significant asset in Malayalam cinema.

Indrans, born Surendran Kochuvelu on March 16, 1956, in Thiruvananthapuram, began his journey in the film industry in 1981 as a costume designer before transitioning to acting with minor roles. Initially, he gained recognition for his comedic performances, excelling in these roles; however, he often found himself typecast, with limited opportunities for filmmakers to explore his full range of abilities.

In recent years, emerging directors have provided him with a broader spectrum of roles, allowing him to showcase his talent to its fullest extent. After four decades in the industry, Indrans received a Special Mention at the 69th National Film Awards for his role in the film Home (2021), directed by Rojin Thomas. He has successfully portrayed an array of characters, from serious and villainous to comedic and dramatic, making him one of the most adaptable actors in modern Malayalam cinema.

Before his acting career took off, Indrans faced significant hardships, including poverty, which forced him to leave school at a young age. Despite his academic prowess, he was unable to continue his education because his family could not afford the necessary uniform and books. “I was a top student and always sat in the front row. However, in the fourth grade, the issue of the uniform arose, preventing me from attending school that year. The following year, we faced the same financial constraints,” Indrans recounted, highlighting the struggles he endured as one of seven children in his family.

After achieving his first National Film Award, Indrans took the opportunity to sit for the Class VII equivalency examinations through the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority in 2024, reviving his aspiration to complete his formal education. Though he initially aimed to take the Class 10 equivalency exam, he learned he needed to pass the Class VII exam and obtain the corresponding certificate first.

Recently, Indrans appeared in the films Aadu 3: One Last Ride – Part 1, directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, and Bhishmar by East Coast Vijayan. He is also preparing for the release of the highly anticipated film Patriot, featuring renowned actors Mammootty and Mohanlal, directed by Mahesh Narayanan.
