A troubling incident involving Danish Shaikh and a complainant has significantly impacted the lives of several employees at Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit in Nashik. The wife of one of the accused employees expressed her concerns, asserting that the situation stems from a personal relationship, rather than any wrongdoing by the other employees involved.
According to the woman, whose husband is a senior employee among seven detained individuals—with one female staff member reportedly evading authorities—there is no connection between the various cases that have been consolidated into one. The Nashik police have lodged nine First Information Reports (FIRs), encompassing charges including sexual harassment and religious conversion, with Shaikh facing a specific allegation of rape. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced on Monday that a comprehensive investigation is currently in progress, and all seven employees have been suspended pending the outcome.
In an anonymous interview with The Indian Express, the woman recounted that it was common knowledge within the office that Shaikh had been involved romantically with the woman who has accused him of rape. She noted that her husband mentioned the complainant often waited long hours for Shaikh to finish his work and had begun to adopt certain religious practices that distressed her family.
She further revealed that a fallout between Shaikh and the complainant’s parents in February led to political intervention, which ultimately pressured the woman into filing a police complaint. Unfortunately, other employees, including her husband, became entangled in the situation despite having no involvement in the original incident.
An uncle of one of the accused corroborated this account, indicating that his nephew had informed him of a police complaint against a female employee but insisted that it did not involve anyone else. The accused’s wife explained that her husband had been on leave when he was summoned by police in late March to discuss the investigation concerning Shaikh. She emphasized that her husband had minimal contact with Shaikh and that their interactions were limited to casual greetings.
The wife described the distressing moment when her husband was arrested. After attending a family function, he went to work only to later inform her that several colleagues were being taken to the police station to sign documents. By late evening, he communicated that he was being detained, leading her to rush to the police station to advocate for his innocence. She was informed in the early hours that the arrest was related to new complaints from other women, not the original FIR against Shaikh.
Expressing her disbelief, the woman noted that she knew the complainants and was certain they had never raised any issues previously. With two young children to care for, she questioned the veracity of the allegations against her husband, emphasizing his respect for others’ beliefs and dietary preferences.
The initial FIR against Shaikh, who is 34 years old, was filed at Deolali Police Station on March 26 and includes a rape charge. During the investigation, authorities uncovered additional alleged incidents, resulting in eight more FIRs. The police stated that the complainant had been in a relationship with Shaikh, who allegedly concealed his marital status and children from her. The rape charge was based on claims that he had engaged in sexual relations under the pretense of marriage, while charges of religious sentiment violation were added due to claims that he influenced her religious practices.
Currently, six of the accused remain in judicial custody, while Pune-based operations manager Ashiwini Chainani is in police custody. The wife of one of the detained employees mentioned that all accused individuals are engineers, with one having recently joined the company through campus recruitment.
According to her, Chainani was supportive of the arrested employees but has also been taken into custody, which may deter others from coming forward. Police allege that Chainani is implicated because a complainant reported that she discouraged her from pursuing claims of sexual harassment, despite her role on the office’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment committee.
A police officer involved in the investigation stated that their actions were based on the testimonies received. They assured the complainants that they could share their experiences without fear, leading to the registration of FIRs based on their statements, which were recorded in front of a magistrate. The officer confirmed that a thorough investigation will be conducted, with chargesheets filed depending on the findings.
Defense attorneys for the accused previously argued that the allegations stem from misunderstandings or playful remarks and that individuals’ voluntary actions have been unjustly criminalized.
