Akshay Kumar, who is gearing up for the release of his new horror-comedy film, Bhoot Bangla, recently recounted a haunting story from his childhood. In a conversation with HT City, he disclosed that his parents faced a life-threatening situation shortly after his birth.
During the interview, Akshay shared that his arrival followed a special prayer made by his parents at the Vaishno Devi temple, where they requested a “naughty child.” He recalled, “My parents prayed at Vaishno Devi, asking for a child, specifically asking, ‘Please give us a child, but let him be naughty.’ A year later, I was born.”
To express their gratitude for the blessing of a child, his parents planned a visit back to Vaishno Devi after Akshay’s first birthday. However, their journey took an unexpected turn. Akshay elaborated, “They brought me with them, but during the trip, I suddenly became very ill. My fever spiked to 103°F, and then 104°F, leading to my unconsciousness. The doctor in Katra suggested they take me to Delhi. This was in 1969, and medical facilities in Katra were limited at that time.” Despite the alarming circumstances, Akshay’s mother remained steadfast in her faith. She believed, “If Mata Rani (the goddess) has given us this son, then if she wishes, she can take him back. But we will not turn back; we will continue our journey to the temple.”
With determination, Akshay’s parents pressed on, chanting “Jai Mata Di” as they made their way up the mountain. Akshay vividly recalled, “They had dressed me in a red frock, which I still possess, and I was unconscious. They bathed me inside the temple, prayed fervently, and cried as they did so.”
In this poignant moment, a stranger approached Akshay’s father and commented, “Your son has a beautiful smile.” Akshay reflected, “My father turned to look at me, and I was smiling. Miraculously, my fever dropped to 98°F. I was completely well. I’m not certain what medicine they administered, but there was something about the energy in that place that helped me recover spontaneously.”
