During a commemoration of Dr. B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary in Jalandhar, the President of the Punjab BJP, Sunil Jakhar, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government regarding the controversial ‘beadbi Bill.’ He suggested that this legislative effort was merely a tactic to distract the public from pressing issues, such as the declining law and order situation and the state’s deteriorating financial circumstances.
“In times of crisis, sensitive matters like these often resurface to conceal governmental failures,” Jakhar asserted.
Addressing concerns about Punjab’s economic status, Jakhar pointed out that escalating debt and ineffective financial management have led the state into a precarious situation. He noted, “State employees are experiencing delays in their salaries, and approximately Rs 15,000 crore in Dearness Allowance arrears remain unsettled.”
Jakhar condemned the state administration for its intentions to dispute court rulings regarding DA payments, labeling this move as detrimental to the public interest.
He also raised the matter of 1,780 unfilled positions within Punjab’s quota at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), claiming, “While the state engages in disputes over BBMB affairs, it neglects to address its own staffing issues.”
Recognizing Baba Saheb’s pivotal role as the architect of the Indian Constitution and a proponent of social justice, Jakhar remarked, “Ambedkar’s principles of unity, awareness, and struggle are still pertinent today and inspire countless individuals.”
He emphasized that the central government’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fundamentally aligned with Baba Saheb’s ideals of inclusive development, while criticizing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration for not embodying these principles.
Jakhar stated that, despite the frequent references made by the state government to the legacies of Baba Saheb and Bhagat Singh, there has been a failure to implement these ideals in governance, accusing Mann of prioritizing publicity over effective governance.
